Guest guest
This is probably been covered before but I'm relatively new to AFIBSupport so I'll ask anyway. Through all the years of AFIB, all the ablations, all the cardioversions, all the drugs, the only test that was done was to check my thyroid. It was fine but I've always wondered if there are other systemic problems that could manifest themselves through A-Fib. I'm thinking about hormone/enzyme imbalances (other than those caused by the thyroid), nervous system disorders or even allergies and drug sensitivities. Personally, I have lipomas all over the place, have since childhood, and it's aften made me wounder if one couldn't be pushing on a nerve or a gland or if the underlying cause of the multiple lipomas couldn't be somehow related to the A-Fib. I'd be interested in your opinions.
Guest guest
Garrett, you pose some interesting questions. The causative factors often mentioned are stuctural or functional heart problems, CAD, hypertension, hyperthyroid condition, and stimulant or alcohol consumption. Personally I have never seen any mention of allergies, drug sensitivities, or lipomas. It may be that connections have been made, and I haven't seen the literature. garrett63376 garrett63376@...> wrote: This is probably been covered before but I'm relatively new to AFIBSupport so I'll ask anyway. Guest guest
Garrett - Let me know what the results of the test are. Guest guest
Hi Phyllis, At this point there are no tests planned. I will be talking to my EP on Tuesday, though, and will ask him if he thinks it's worth pursuing. If he's like my GP, he'll simply blow it off. I'll let you know either way, though. Thanx, Garrett > > > > This is probably been covered before but I'm relatively new to > > > Don't forget sleep apnea as a causative factor. > > > > > > > AFIBSupport so I'll ask anyway. > > > > > > > > Through all the years of AFIB, all the ablations, all the > > > > cardioversions, all the drugs, the only test that was done was to > > > > check my thyroid. Guest guest
Garrett - There is plenty of evidence in the literature linking apnea and a fib now; this isn't just my opinion or my anecdotal evidence. My cardios also seemed disinterested. But I got the GP to refer me for the sleep test. If your insurance does not require a referral just find a doctor who is accredited in this area and go for it. If you want a link about how to find an accredited sleep lab/doctor, let me know. Guest guest
Cardiologists are weird beasts. My first cardiologist recommended a sleep study but would not make a referral. He felt that it would somehow be usurping my GP. My EP just assumed I had apnea and even told me to bring my CPAP to the hospital when I went in. When I told him I'd never had a sleep study and asked him to refer me to a sleep specialist, he again deferred to my GP. I have set up an appointment but, as with most specialists these days, it was set up for 6 weeks after I made the call. I still have a few weeks to wait and that is just for the consultation. God knows how long it will take to actually have the sleep study done.
