Guest guest
Hi I am new to this group. I have had an irregular heart beat since 2000. I am a 56 year old male. I have been taking Mettropolol on and off. Lately my irregular heartbeat has been more common. This past Monday I drove myself to th ER. They said I was in A Fib. They gave me a blood thinner and some pill to get my heart back into a normal beat. They also have me started on Coumidin a blood thinner. Has anyone been taking the blood thinner? Any problems with it? I read the side effects and they sound like horror stories. Anyone have similar symptoms to mine? I was discharged from the hospital the same day. The doctor said that A Fib is not dangerous. Any responses would be greatly appreciatede. I am scared to death of the A Fib and especially the Coumiden (Wharfarin). THANKS ! Guest guest
Welcome to the group. I am new as well (about 2 wks). I joined due to caring for my mother who was diagnosed with Afib last month. She too was placed on Amiodarone and Coumadin. The Coumadin was just prescribed this Monday, so she has taken 2 pills so far. I am also very worried about the effects you read about and the horror stories. I am sorry I don't have any experiences or advice to share with you, for I am just like you, walking down the path of the unknown, but what I can tell you is you have found the right place. This is a wonderful group with caring people who will try and help you and no question you have is dumb, so don't feel that way. They have already helped me a bunch and I ask a lot of questions! Take care and I hope you feel better soon. Angi A Fib in general Hi I am new to this group. I have had an irregular heart beat since 2000. I am a 56 year old male. Guest guest
Mike, don't be scared to death of either. Lots of us have been in afib and on coumadin, and neither is necessarily so awful. Guest guest
Hi Mike, 's response was right on! Many participants in this group take Coumadin or Warfarin due to AFIB, including me. I am not the type that likes to take pills of any type but the alternative (potential stroke) is not a great option either. I was dagnosed in 2004 and believe me I was really scared. Suddenly you are hearing new medical terms and taking new meds all the time just wanting a simple explanation and cure for what's ailing you. Unfortunately AF is not easy to explain in general terms or to cure but keep on reading the postings from this group - you will find a lot of useful information is shared. Good luck and try to stay calm - over 2 millon people live with AF, key word being LIVE! A Fib in general Hi I am new to this group. I have had an irregular heart beat since 2000. Guest guest
Hey Mike, I was also very scared when I had my first episode of A-fib.The only piece of advise I want to give you is to find the most experienced EP in your area. If there is not one in your area, go find one. I found that your average cardiologist knows surprisingly little about A-fib. I would have a complete heart examination to be certain that there are no underlying causes of your a-fib and then you and your EP can decide what to do next. I highly recommend reading the posts on this board regularly. It is a great source of information. As you learn more you will realize that there are ways to control or even cure you problem. Guest guest
I've had a-fib since 1999, and currently am taking Toprol XL and flecanaide. When I stopped the Toprol on my own last fall due to the side effects, the a-fib became *MUCH* worse (four really ghastly a-fib " events " since November), so I'm wondering about your taking Metoprolol " off and on " . This is with your doctor's supervision, right? Going off of Toprol on my own was easily the worst decision I ever made. I felt fantastic for the first two weeks as the depression lifted, but then had some really frightening a-fib; much, much worse than I'd ever had before. I'm not taking Coumidin at present, but I'm fairly sure I'll be put back on it when I see the EP tomorrow. I took it in 1999 - 2000, but it was pre-menopause, which definitely made my life exciting. Now, I don't anticipate problems - what side effects are you concerned about? A Fib in general Hi I am new to this group. I have had an irregular heart beat since 2000. I am a 56 year old male. Guest guest
Mike: Welcome to the group. I understand your concerns of having A-fib. But I agree with the other postings I have read in response to yours. It is " scary " at first until you get educated on what this is all about. I was diagnosed 18 months ago. I will be 52 this year. I just went in for a normal stress test and they said, " Do you feel okay? " I said, Yeah. My blood pressure soared and heart rate went to 220!! But really I felt ok!! That bothered them. I have been on Cardizem , toprol and warfarin for a couple months now, since other stuff wasn't working for me. It seems for me the key is keeping blood pressure under control.. You will find everyone's situation is different and you learn to listen to your body closer. But you can live with it. I wish you the best....Keep in touch with this web site and it will help you alot. Sherry Indianapolis --------- A Fib in general Hi I am new to this group.
