The Feds are starting to push against the First Amendment again, and we must

be careful lest we end up in the position of Fr. Niemoller... " There were

none left to speak up for me! "

Why are they running undercover operations to confiscate eagle feathers when

they should turn around and watch illegal aliens coming across the border?

What is a greater threat to this nation - eagle feathers or people entering

this country illegally?

The funny part is that, according to the more detailed report that I got

from a friend who is a recognized authority on NDN matters (he was even invited

to DC for the opening of the Native American Museum of the sonian), this

deal wasn't even an undercover operation...the Feds walked into a ceremony

and proceeded to confiscate the feathers from any dancer that could not

immediately produce a card certifying him or her as an NDN from a recognized

tribe

(which you might imagine...and when several of the registered NDNs went to

the feds to recover their legal possessions, they were blown off, and the agent

refused to return the goods.

Fish and Wildlife should KNOW that feathers are shed. The feathers that are

collected are not obtained by plucking a bird, for heaven's sake! That is WHY

the feathers are referred to as a " Gift from God " . What unmitigated idiocy!

Part of the problem is the difficulty of telling shed feathers from plucked

feathers (and more importantly, what caused the death of the bird they were

plucked from) once the feathers are incorporated into the intricate beaded

regalia... Looking at the close ups, these are not tourist class 'war bonnets',

but full blown regalia...roughly equivalent to a Bishop's full Mitre and

Crossier rig for Easter!

And as far as no tribes being Federally recognized in the Valley, I suspect

that dates back to the days of the first registration, when the Tex-Mex

boarder was much more porous, and NDN/mixed blood folks went back and forth

with

pretty much impunity....and no one bothered with registering what they

considered transient peoples.

The Iroquois (whose lands straddle the Canadian - New York) don't seem to

Chuckle...there is evidence that the Seven Nations of the Iroquois

Confederation was a stable state for almost 500 years before the landing of the

Pilgrims at Cape Cod...and there is good evidence that some of the debates

surrounding both the Declaration of Independence, and the US Constitution were

influenced by the standards set by the Iroquois Confederation.

As opposed to the state of the situation in Lower Texas and into New Mexico

during the 1830s to 1930s time frame...

wonderful... walking into and interrupting a RELIGIOUS CEREMONY !?!?! Reminds me

of another regime not that long ago.

On top of that, I don't know many Native American tribes with dance regalia

that accomodate wallets!

LAN - That's right! IIRC, there was some comment in the Federalist papers (or

the Anti-Federalist papers) about that! Thanks for reminding me!

Still... the treatment of the Native Americans of the Southwest and Plains has

been atrocious.
