Guest guest
Yes, it works in the background, but you should see the icon sitting in your system tray. (If not, go find it and open it.) Right click the icon, and you can set some preferences for it. Did it stop those bad ones from your messenger service? What app do you use for messenger service? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Rennie My Home Page: http://www.renesue.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Re: Pop-up hell Yes, they do have a free edition. http://www.panicware.com/product_psfree.html
Guest guest
Jan, Thanks. It wasn't running. I went and found it and installed it and now the icon is on the tray. Ken Pop-up hell Anyone know how to stop those blue pop-ups that show up in the middle of the screen suddenly?? One of the pop-ups once made the mistake of giving instructions on changing computer settings to stop them, and I did that and it seemed to work for the blue ones in the middle of the screen, but then I had the computer in the shop last week and I see they are back. I hate those things!! TO UNSUBSCRIBE send a blank email to NMTC-unsubscribe
Guest guest
Rennie, I just got it up and running, so I will have to give it a little time to see what is different. I don't know what 'app' is in your second question. KEn Whoa! it works! I just saw a millisecond flash of an image come up in the middle of the screen and then disappear and then a little note showed up in the lower left that notified me that the popup protector is working. Cool! Re: Pop-up hell Yes, they do have a free edition. http://www.panicware.com/product_psfree.html

Guest guest
Messenger service automatically runs in the background in XP. Lots of unneeded services do and most can be turned off or put on manual, saving lots of memory load and speeding up your computer. Guest guest
Last week I tried turning some of those things off. I didn't quite follow your instructions correctly, though. You said not to mess around too much if I didn't know what I was doing - which I didn't - and to do maybe one thing at a time and see the result - which I didn't do that either. Ummmm, those were mistakes. I ended up losing my connection and not knowing how to back out of what I did. I scrambled down to the local computer shop with my computer and cable modum in hand and they fiddled with it, for a long time, thinking that my McAfee firewall was blocking the connection for some reason and also calling the ISP and trying to get me going again from there. They have the same 'Road Runner cable'. They got nowhere. They seemed to not know the default settings that are tucked away in services.msc. I didn't know they were there either. I came home, hooked it back up. Hunted down the default settings and reset everything to original, and then called the ISP and they got me going again right away. I must admit I am a little jumpy about changing any of those settings again. I think I would be getting in over my head. Guest guest
Quixote, You mean there's a way to get rid of messenger with XP? Please, please tell me how. I've tried to disable him but ended up having trouble with IE, which I like to use. That little guy aggravates me to no end! Guest guest
Quixote, Actually, I guess I would also try to get rid of some extra things if I knew how to do it right and the stuff wasn't necessary. Guest guest
Here is a step-by-step guide. If you are unsure about a particular setting then leave it alone. Most are pretty explanatory. If you have a particular question feel free to email me personally about it. http://www.deviantpc.com/forums/showthread.php?s= & threadid=1926 Quixote Re: Pop-up hell > > > Yes, they do have a free edition. > > http://www.panicware.com/product_psfree.html > > > > > > > TO UNSUBSCRIBE send a blank email to NMTC-unsubscribe > > >
