I hate them, too. " Pop-up Stopper " doesn't work on those. I have noticed

a new strain (as in bacteria) of pop-ups that come up on your bar and you

cannot sign off until you click on them...but you can't close them without

opening them...and when you do open them, they're full-screen with no way to

click them off. You have to toggle back to where you were and close out the

program to be rid of them. For every " pop-up stopper' " , a new breed appears.

Anyone know how to stop those blue pop-ups that show up in the middle of the

screen suddenly?? One of the pop-ups once made the mistake of giving

instructions on changing computer settings to stop them, and I did that and it

seemed to work for the blue ones in the middle of the screen, but then I had the

computer in the shop last week and I see they are back. I hate those things!!

It depends on what the popups say and what windows version you are running as to

how you need to turn them off. For example, popups from your firewall are a

good thing because the firewall is asking your permission to let a new program

access the web. Popups asking if you want to save your password/login name when

surfing the web might be another type of popup window you'd be seeing. It

really depends on what the popups say as to how to get rid of them. We need

more info :)

You can visit download.com (no www.) Enter pop in the search bar and you'll

find more pop-up stoppers than you can imagine with reader recommendations.

It's part of CNETs site. Some are free; many are available for a 30-day trial.

I was using Guard IE for a time, but it eventually proved to be ineffective (and

I paid for it after the 30 days!).

I'm using Norton Internet Security now and it hasn't let a single pop-up

through, but it's part of a suite and not a freebie. Good luck, those pop-up

are one of my pet peeves, too.

Jan,

I am running windows XP professional. The pop-ups I am talking about are always

blue, always right in the middle of the screen, always in the same type of text,

always ads from outside somewhere - stocks, make bunches of money with no

effort, sex something or other - you know, the regular stuff. I even get ones

that tell where I can go to pay to 'stop these irritating pop-ups'.

The other type of pop-ups that I get don't bother me. They are in the corner or

edge of the screen are are usually an ad associate with some site I have

visited. I just X them out. They are the multicolor kind.

Oops, just got another blue bugger in the middle of the screen selling stocks. I

see that it always says 'messenger service' at the top left in the blue bar at

the top of the pop-up. I use Outlook Express.

I have McAfee firewall, or had it, maybe. Last week I lost my cable connection

when I tried to change some settings to see if I could get the computer to run

faster. They thought that maybe the lost connection was because I had McAfee

firewall, and they worked quite a while to try to remove the program. I am not

sure if they were successful. I haven't received a McAfee update this week so I

may need to contact them about getting set up again. Maybe that is a different

issue from the pop-ups.

Anyway, obviously I got connected back up.

I have some visitors here now and need to be awayfor an hour or two.

I will check back ASAP. Hope some of this info helps. Any suggestions are

appreciated. Ken

Ken, I use a free program called Pop-Up Stopper. It's available at

http://www.panicware.com/. As someone mentioned, there may be *some* things it

won't catch because the marketing villains keep coming up with new ways to

provide us with their advertising, but it works pretty well for me. You can

also set it so that only one browser window will open at a time (browser window

is different than pop-up window). That keeps the evil scripts that open umteen

browser windows from happening. When you want a GOOD window to open (like if

you are buying at any internet site, sometimes they use lil popups that you *do*

want -- like photo of product) you just hold down the control key. Same thing

to open another browser window...just hold down the control key. Anyway, it

works well for me. :)

I've heard that's a good one. Another one is Popup Dummy. I have it because it

also works with the browser with AOL.

Any time you have a window you would like to close without interacting with

it, hit control+alt+delete to bring up the task manager and you can close it

from there.

Rennie, I just downloaded it. I assume it just works in the background. I'll

give it some time and see how it works. I see now that these ones I hate that

come up in the middle of the screen and completely stop what you are doing are

coming through my messenger service - always the same format, type, etc. They

make me want to go and find the senders and wring their neck.
