Janet,

I too had papillary and hashi's, problems with my voice and salivary

glands, etc.

it has been 20 years since my first dx and even though i have had

waxing and waning times of not so great health, i have lived a happy

and full life. My son is raised, i have worked in construction and

forestry as well as teaching and management over the intervening

years and returned to college at the age of 38.

I still lose my voice if i strain my voice too much and will never be

a professional singer, but i still love to sing and play guitar. I

have had dental problems over the years, possibly because of the

salivary damage, and have several crowns, but no removable plates.

It took about 6 months for me to feel comfortable with my voice and

the pain to subside to a background level.

The biggest mistake/regret/whatever was not following up on a yearly

checkup, but that was also a life choice. i was without insurance

for several years and just considered the cancer as the status quo.

It is something you need to be somewhat diligent about and one of

your challenges over your life will be to find a doctor that is

knowledgeable about this particular form of cancer.

Janet, there are alot of us in this sisterhood/brotherhood that are

here to share with....

good luck

Dear KimMarie,

Thank you so much for responding to my e-mail and for sharing what you have

experienced.

I definetly need to get an oncologist for following-up. The radiation doctor

just wanted me to

live my life and come back in a year for another scan. I don't feel comfortable

with that.

Especially since I have had some complications with my voice and salivary

glands/irregular

heart beats. I just wish I could get the fear of cancer out of my mind. It is

like a burgular that

has broken into my house and intruded. How did you get beyond worrying? I am

trying to

hold onto my faith in all of this.

Thank you for your encouraging words!

Janet

Hi Alisa,

Thank you__I will see if I can get my hands on my reports. I looked in the

phone book today and

I found only 3 Endo doctors. I live in ton, SC. I would be willing to

travel if I have to. We

have a medical university here__Do you think that would be a good choice???????

I am feeling

very frustrated with all of this right now__also my husband just had quadruple

bypass surgery.

The last four months have been very stressful. You all have been very

enlighting, helpful and

encouraging!

Thanks again,

Janet

Re: Hello

Hi, Janet -

> How do I get my hands on all my lab reports?

Just ask :-). Sometimes hospitals charge for copies of reports, but

the doctors get them, so I'd ask your doctor. What I do now is ask my

doctor to write " copy to patient " on my lab slips, and they send the

results to me. And you want to know ALL the numbers, rather than

relying on a doctor to say " it's normal " - cause " normal " isn't

always right for thycans.

> What are TG Antibodies?

has a great explanation here:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Thyca/message/22049

> How do I get that checked.

It's a blood test, and they do at the same time they test your TG and

TSH levels.

> I was told when took my thyroid out, that is

> when they found out I had Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. That was the

> last I heard of it, no one has mentioned it to me again. Is this

> something I need to stay on top of also?

Just something to keep in the back of your mind :-). It means they

may do more other types of tests (like ultrasounds or scans), rather

than relying as much on the TG levels.

> Ahhhhh! I wish the doctors would tell me these things!

I know, it is very frustrating. The first step is to get to the RIGHT

doctor - Find an endocrinologist who is familiar with thyca. If you

tell us where you live, someone here may be able to give you a name of

someone in your area.

[from another one of your posts]

> Do you think I need an Oncologist also to follow up with the cancer

> part of this?

No, you don't. That seems weird, I know - the first thing my family

said to me when I told them I might have thyroid cancer is that I

should see an oncologist. But oncologists aren't the specialists who

deal with this cancer, which has very different treatment than other

ones - it's the endocrinologist, who'll coordinate with the nuclear

med docs when scans are needed. The endo follows us for the rest of

our lives, regulating our meds and coordinating tests (ultrasounds,

bloodwork, scans).

Cheers,

Alisa

Well, if you already lost 27 pounds, you must be doing something right! Good

Job! How did you lose those pounds, and what about your weight loss plan are

you finding difficult to stick with? This group is very supportive, and

hopefully we can help you find the strength to keep going, and maybe offer

some advice on changes you can make to help things along.

kim. that is the common falicy that no one can be proud of a heavier

person. you know, that weight loss already should make you proud.

you did that, not anyone else. i have only been here a little time,

and these people here are great. they are so supportive and

concerned about everyone. it is nice. so jump right in and start

being proud of yourself....

I have an underactive thyroid and have had this for many years...I found this group by accident but I am so pleased I did , I have been reading through the posts and found them very informative....I agree you don't claim to be doctors but you are very knowledgeable and I think when you have been through these things you learn so much...just wanted to say Hello and thankyou for this group...Jeanne

Might be a bit of an exaggeration.. but he must have noticed the difference in you... that has to say something about learning more about what is doing on and being persistent in getting proper care....

Hello Jeanne,I live in Suffolk, nice to see you here. I too am HypoT and have had a bit of a battle to getmy medication raised to a level that allows me to feel'normal'. I must have reached the 'normal' level as aneighbour of mine told me this funny little anecdote; He has been feeling ill for several years and hasrecently been diagnosed as hypothyroid. After 4 monthson 25mcg of thyroxine he told the nurse at ourdoctor's practice that he wasn't happy, still felt illand wanted "some of that stuff that ison.... she is skipping around like a spring chicken".I think his description is a bit of an exageration butI do feel better than I have for years.Hope you get the help you need here.
