I know this question/discussion has been posted numerous times, however here it

is once again.

Does Medicare cover any of the cost for a home health aide? What suggestions do

anyone have for the most financially efficient strategy to obtain this service?

Thank you.

Suzanne,

There is a chance that if the doctor is saying the patient needs skilled care,

Medicare will pay it's portion of that (a nurse a couple of times a week) AND

some

bathing assistance. I have finally got an aide coming 2 hours on Mon and 4

hours on Wed to bathe Charlotte and do her PT with her. But I pay a reduced

amount ($12

per hour) for the aide. That is about as much as you can hope for out of

Medicare.

Barb has had good luck with hiring a couple of men to help with Ken. She

hires them on her own and got good ones. They cover a good part of the time.

She

does pay them on her own and she can tell you better what she does as far as

taxes, etc.

Take care, Bill and Charlotte

Barb :

I would be curious to know how you go about seeking the home health aides you

have used, what their background is, what rate you pay, how many hours you use

them and any other information or tax information that you can provide.

I do think Dad needs someone in the home now, if not all the time, most of the

day. Took another fall this a.m. and took out the toilet!

Please let me know as we are anxious to try to work something out as quickly as

possible. Thanks so much. And thank you, Bill, for your input.

Suzanne: Medicare from what I have seen on this list can differ from State

to State. Here in Oregon Medicare willl pay for a nurse, Bath person, PT

person and the amount of help depends on the need. Jack when he had a bad

UTI was having a nurse come out once or twice a week, plus a bath person and

PT person. After he started to improve, they cut back on the nurse twice a

month, PT once a month, and the bath person still comes twice a week. You

need the help of your primary doctor to hook into the service. If you need

someone to come in for respite, they do not cover that. We have to pay for

that service our self. Check with your In-Home-Health agency or social

service worker to see what is available in your area. Judy
