Dear Primetime:

I have a subject for you new medical mysteries show. VULVODYNIA. Yahoo.com has message boards with hundreds of women that have constant burning and itching in their vulvar area and doctors telling them they are crazy. I was told I had vulvodynia and that I did not have a yeast problem....and I went on a special yeast free diet and took antifungals and all of my problems went away. I then went off of the diet and it all came back. I have yet to find a doctor that can help me. I think this is related to hormones and my immune system. It seems to be a total body problem, not just a vulvar one. Many of the women have chronic fatigue, white tongue, acne and various other problems.

Thousands of women are suffering and most doctors just say" take an antidepressent" It's a cop out. We are depressed because no one seems to be able to HELP US!

One woman stopped eating GLUTEN products and her burning and itching went away..another started using topical estrogen and testosterone and hers went away..then there are hundreds of others still suffering. It seems to be different for every woman, what works for one doesn't work for another. Many of us starting having problems after being on birth control or using over the counter yeast infection medications. It affects woman of all ages, not just menopausal.

This is a hard disease to have because it is TABOO to talk about. Female friends don't want to hear about it nor do they understand. Some women have had their husbands leave them. Others are afraid to start relationships. Hundreds of women are suffering many in silence and we need help. Please help us.

I still personally believe that antidepressants are overly prescribed for tons of condition, not just VV. The doctor that told me to take them was an internal medicine doc and he didn't mean to shut off any pain. He thought this was all in my head.

If

you actually do send this be sure to correct the number of women

suffering. Its millions of women – last I read in the 10million

range. Get those numbers up where they belong.

Also – to be

fair – the antidepressants prescribed for a goodly number of women are

used to suppress pain – by shutting off the pain pathway to the

brain.

,

It is true that antidepressants can be overprescribed, but there

are almost as many people who are depressed as there are who

suffer from chronic pain.

Now as to how many of those who are depressed actually have a

physical condition that is still undiagnosed such as a thyroid

condition is unknown.
