Hi,

I too have excessive/profuse sweating originating i think from the vulva.

It has been this way for me, for four years now, but have only been met with

puzzled looks by a few doctors i've mentioned it too. It was my dear

naturopath who shed some light for me (possibly) regarding this symptom.

There are sweat glands in the vulvar region called apocrine glands

responsible for this annoying/embarrassing symptom. My most recent guess as

to what might be going on is that these apocrine glands have become

irritated/stimulated/overactive, possibly due to lack of a glycosaminoglycan

GAG barrier that has been damaged/tampered with/destroyed by antibiotics(?),

catheterization procedures (?), yeast medication(?), and this lack of GAG

barrier also accounts for the continuous burning we feel in the vulvar

region. I'm amazed others have this symptom!! I thought i was alone with

this one! It can be so troublesome/embarrassing. When my husband and i are

out on the town and i'm in a dress (by and large...without underwear) and

after sitting, i am soooo conscious of leaving a wet spot on the back of my

dress and the chair i am sitting on. I am constantly asking him to walk

behind me a minute to check.....aagghh :). Often times I will chose to

stand when sitting is far more appropriate.....usually back to a wall, just

so a wet spot can air dry!! Mine does not seem to have an odor though. I've

not smelled one and have often asked my husband if he detects an odor...and

he claims no also.

The GAG barrier, i am just researching at the moment....and i'm

extrapolating from what damages this barrier on the interior of the bladder

and urinary system.....and thinking it also normally coats the genital

area.......wish i had access to a lab....wish i could consult with a

scientist whose specialty lay in this area. It would be so

promising/helpful....to explore further further.

Does anyone have more insights into the GAG barrier hypothesis?

CarolLynn

HI Kay, *smile* ;)

Seeing both you and mentioning that sweating and if the odor isn't from the vagina but you feel it's more from the vulvar area.. I'm still thinking it's probably a bacterial thing. (and could be wrong *smile*)

What makes me say that is because they say even with under arm BO... that is caused by a bacteria. Not that it's necessarily a contagious thing or bad....(just like BO when we wash up we're ususally ok and it doesnt mean we're dirty or unclean either) it's just that it's the combination of a bacteria with the sweat & heat that causes the odor. And bacteria is all around us all the time... some good, some not so good. ;)

Just lay out a piece of meat in the summer time... and soon it's got bacteria on it and goes bad (and stinky *grin*) for the same reason. Just being in the air alone. ;)

Believe me hon just my two cents worth, but what to do about it? That is the 64 dollar question. Probably just trying to keep drier, or pour water over ourselves after urinating no matter how good we wipe or blot eh? What a stinky problem, *chuckle* but I just hope it's not causing any more pain at least, even tho I'm sure it's embarassing. *sigh*...

Hugs hon

Dee~ ;)

Hi all,

Just keep in mind that if it is that really 'fishy' odor... the one men joke about, (and docs sometimes do call the 'whiff test') I'd be willing to bet 99.% of the time it is a true bacterial infection like Trichimonas or Gardnerella (two of the most common odor producing ones) coming from the vagina (there's no way you could say it's from the vulva or vagina it's so potent, it's everywhere) and one would need an antibiotic to fix that.

It's just unmistakable and can be smelled at quite a distance if it's bad. I just hope it's not that you guys are talking about. *grin*. If it is it's definitely something your physician needs to test you for and you can't wash that away. (in or out).

hugs

Dee~

HI . ;)

I feel better knowing it's not that fishy odor, but sure wish I had an answer for you hon. That really has to tough to deal with. *sigh* I hear you about better to have sweaty palms, I'm so sorry. Hopefully someone's got some ideas for you.

Dee~ ;)

  • 3 weeks later...

I have the same sweating problem as I was diagnosed with LS. My underwear gets wet and while in Hawaii I just took it off as I didn't carry extra panties as I do now. I also have IC and there is a theory that the GAG layer might be faulty. I don't know anymore about it than this.
