One doctor told me the problem was not so much bugs from other people, but the stuff on our bodies, so be careful with your mouth - no hot foods, no flossing, soft toothbrushes. No unpeeled fruits, no raw vegetables - you don't want to eat any dirt and bacteria from the soil. I have found this book "Natural Strategies from Cancer Patients" by L. Blaylock, MD to be very helpful. I didn't know whether I was coming or going...I don't know exactly what got to me, as I have been very realistic to everything and knew what was to come, but fear, anxiety, Anger and the blues set right in. I feel better now, trying to just stay busy. I fear that I may not be able to work and that really doesn't set well with me. I'm a Shift Manager and lead wait at our local Pizza Hut and school letting out with all the youngsters. Doctor, has warned me about being around sick folk during the chemo, but what is a gal to do, no workie no money to pay the bills. Sigh, just a chance I take, unless the cell count goes to low. But he is taking all next week off to be with me, for surgery and chemo. So I will squeeze his hand tight and love him bunches. I try very hard to stay as postive as can be. Was only about six or seven months. And she was not employed at the time. She had worked when she was much younger but quit when the babies came. It wasn't a long time but it did help her out. I told them all I was going to stick around to see my grandkids and to drive them (our kids) crazy!! I had gone through chemo and was able to carry out my daily routine work. Only once my blood count went very low and I needed an immediate tranfusion. Guest guest Posted May 20, 2006 Report Share Posted May 20, 2006 Jolene, I'm a college professor and I had the same worry as you, that I'd feel too sick or be too tired to work while I was having chemo & rads. The dean of my college had fought his own battle the year before with MS, and he advised me to cut my teaching load back just a bit but keep working if I could. It was great advice, though by 2/3 of the way through chemo my body was dragging terribly and I needed more rest than there was in the entire universe. The fatigue was beyond description, except to people who've been there & done that. My saving graces were a supportive boss, 4 great kids & husband to help me at home, and the flexibility of college teaching. It would have been much tougher to keep to an 8-5 kind of schedule; even though I think working is part of the healing process, so is getting enough rest.
