Guest guest
Serotonin Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5HT) is formed by the hydroxylation and decarboxylation of tryptophan (see Specialized Products of Amino Acids). The greatest concentration of 5HT (90 - 95%) is found in the enterochromaffin cells of the gastrointestinal tract. Most of the remainder of the body's 5HT is found in platelets and the CNS. The effects of 5HT are felt most prominently in the cardiovascular system, with additional effects in the respiratory system and the intestines. Vasoconstriction is a classic response to the administration of 5HT. , you questioned the fact that most serotonin is stored in the GI tract, but it's a fact. I think we are having a problem with semantics. You are referencing information about STORAGE of administered serotonin, I was speaking of the PRODUCTION of sertonoin. From the New England Journal of Medicine dated January 1, 2002: " All of the serotonin-producing neurons of the mammalian brain are located in nuclei in the mid- and hindbrain regions. " I should have been more clear in my earlier post... hope this clears things up!

Guest guest
> When I initially stated that 95% of available serotonin is stored in the gut, you corrected me. I think this is an area of this discussion that we need to agree to disagree on. The research I am familiar with and the medical journal articles I have reviewed, focus all their attention on the major storage sites of serotonin as a neurotransmitter in the neurons of the brain. The area of research I have spent most of my time on, is that of SSRI effects on serotonin and treatment of mental illness. My education on this issue follows the theory that the changes in the serotonin levels in the brain are correlationally related to a number of mental and physical illnesses. I am sorry if I am unfamiliar with research to the contrary - I am only an overly-proactive Psychiatric Social Worker (with an insatiable curiousity). Believe me when I say my fibroid dx has got me reading a lot of articles I used to put to the bottom of the stack!!!! So, who knows - as I learn more, my perspective and understanding may very well change. Until then, I can only really speak to what I know; and it is always my hope that through sharing information and experiences we can somehow, someway, find some legitamate answers to our most sensitive of questions. I do hope your research answers your questions for you! Best Wishes,

Guest guest
Randi, I had a laproscopic myomectomy done in Atlanta by Dr. Nezhat on Feb 17th....one week later i was back to work, three weeks total and I was as good as new. He is a fantastic doctor, and did pioneer work on the laproscopic technique....he has done over 15,000 of these procedures and I consider him without equal...he does them for ladies from all over the world.....do get an appt...yu will be glad you did. I drove down from Raleigh NC to have it done, after 3 different gynos in this area said i needed a hysterectomy, the last sayin i probably had cancer and should get it out immediately..my uterus that is. Turns out i had two fibroids, one grapefruit size, the other orange sized....he took care of it and said i was as good as a sixteen year old again inside......i am 58. It was the best thing i have done for myself in years...the past two years have been pure misery. Write me privately if you have any other questions. Jil For the sake of the flowers, I water the thorns.

Guest guest
Unfortunately the doctor didn't talk to me after surgery. He talked to my mother, so I am not sure exactly what he did. My procedure lasted like 3.5 hours and was supposed to be 45 minutes. I kinda wonder what happened there. As far as I know, I had a hysteroscopic myo, must of had the fibroid partially within the wall??? He didn't classify it as submucosal or intramural to my mom. He said he could only take like 3/4 of it, because he didn't want to make the wall too thin. I have a recheck next Monday, so I guess I get to quiz him them with my millions of questions. I also had a laproscopic procedure at the same time to remove a paraovarian cyst and some endometriosis. ( I got the works!!!) So if this doesn't help with my problems I might go crazy. I am 27 and before surgery they hadn't really diagnosed me a fibroid or not. They had only performed regular transvaginal ultrasound and knew my uterus was thickened and I had a paraovarian cyst that was continually growing, and I was bleeding like 3 out of 4 weeks a month. I have had a battle with the doctor to even get him to surgery point. I was severely anemic in Dec with a Hb of 5. I tried to tell him where all the blood was going, but he was talking bone marrow aspirates and checking for fecal blood. I convinced him to let me start iron and see if I regenerated before all that. I did and got back to normal before my next period wiped me back out. Then he was talking some bleeding disorder, so I had a bleeding time that was normal. He still thought I had von Willebrands or something. But I was to the point of changing doctors when I told him I wanted something else done to figure out what was going on inside my uterus. So I opted to cut out all the middle work and go straight to surgery. I was scheduled for a D & C, hysteroscopy and laproscopy. I don't think he believed he would find anything in there, but he did!!! Maybe I can get back to a normal life for a little while (until that fibroid grows back). Sorry for rambling Candy

Guest guest
Hey ! I felt great after surgery. I really couldn't tell I had anything done while in the hospital. They didn't give me any pain meds either. I had an outpatient procedure, so I was home in a couple hours afterward. Later that afternoon I got a little sore, but nothing even close to what the pain of a period is like. All I took was Motrin 600mg. I think my soreness is mainly from the laproscopic procedure, just muscle soreness. I would easily go through it again if the fibroid returns. They will give you stronger pain meds because I am sure not everyone has no pain. It has been almost a week and I am still vaguely sore in my lower abdomen, but not bad at all. I hope your procedure goes as well as mine did! Candy
