Hi Debi H.,

My pcp said the same thing to me about the diabetes.

I struggled to get my blood sugar below 120, per my

surgeon's request, before the surgery. I did require

insulin injections while in the hospital, however,

since I have been home (wls 8/02/06), I have not taken

nor needed any diabetes related medicines. My blood

sugar has been in the low 80's to a high of 98.

My pcp was not terribly supportive of me, but I guess

she was wrong.

so, do your best to keep your blood sugar down

leading up to your surgery becauses that will affect

your body's ability to heal, and afterward you should

be great!

Good luck,

Debi (in S.F.)

I heard that once u are diabetic u are always diabetic

even if it becomes latent. I don't care, if it becomes

latent, I'll be satisfied.

That's not what I've heard from my surgeon and their patients. Where

did you hear this?

http://www.obesityaction.org/advocacy/weightlossfactsheet.php

A meta-analysis study including more than 22,000 patients showed the

following effects of surgery on co-morbidities:

¢ª Diabetes was completely resolved in 76.8% of patients.

¢ª High cholesterol was resolved or improved in more than 70% of

patients.

¢ª High blood pressure was resolved in 61.7% of patients.

¢ª Sleep apnea was resolved in 85.7% of patients.

Sorry to say but your PCP is right. Once a Diabetic always a diabetic. The

only difference is after surgery due to change in eating habits you will be a

diet controlled diabetic. But if you should go back to your old eating habits

your sugars wiull rise again.

I saw my primary care physician today and he was not at all happy about my

What's your source on this information? I was diagnosed as pre-

diabetic by my PCP and now she's said I'm no longer pre-diabetic. Is

she mistaken? Are you saying if I had become diabetic I would still

be diabetic? I'd like to read some articles/information on this if

you have them.

Part of my diabetes care is an educational program.

They give me journal articles and stuff to read, I

meet with diabetes educators, nutritionists, that kind

of thing. One of the articles talked about a " cure "

for diabetes. The field states that patients once

diagnosed as a diabetic will always be considered a

diabetic even when the symptoms are alleviated or

removed. This is called a latent diabetic, which kind

of means that the diabetes is asleep and if the

changes in lifestyle are not continued, it will wake

up very quickly. MSNBC has a show on diabetes on

Sunday and a couple months ago, they had a segment on

it as well. Maybe they archive or something and u can

check it out. It doesn't bother me at all to be

latent, I realize that then it's easier for me to

become active again. But really, it's so much better

than popping pills and all the other complications

that come along with it.

Mike,

I found the following article that supports the idea that " once a diabetic,

always a diabetic " :

http://www.aarp.org/bulletin/yourhealth/defying_diabetes.html

and, I found the following article that disputes the idea that " once a diabetic,

always a diabetics " :

http://www.reversingdiabetes.org/

The truth of the matter is that many health professionals differ in their

opinions. It is like that in most things in life: law, politics, WLS, etc.

Everyone has an opinion and can usually support their opinion with some sort of

study/research. I don't think you'll ever find a profession that agrees 100% of

the time.
