There are a number of things that could cause a bloated belly in

someone who maintains a gluten-free diet.

Is she lactose-intolerant?

Is she having problems with constipation due to the low fiber content

of many GF foods? (does she drink enough water?)

Is she reacting to a food that is GF? My son reacts just the same to

soy protein and millet as he does to gluten; big, bloated tummy, gas,

diarrhea.

So even if you're doing a great job keeping your daughter gluten-free,

she may have other food intolerances that haven't been found yet.

Perhaps you could start an elimination diet (no dairy or soy, the 2

most likely culprits) for a while and see if that makes a change. Also

make sure she drinks enough water.

When I was diagnosed at 3 I had the bloated " starvation stomach " . I

couldn't wear dresses with " Waists " for quite a while.. It was after I

was five, and in school. (I don't remember what month i was diagnosed,

so I could have been an old 3, I'm not sure.) I remember going to

school with my skinny little friend wearing her cute little waisted

outfit and I was wearing a little bluebell dress. :( I was so happy

when I first got a normal skirt with an elastic waist! Anyway, it takes

a fair amount of time, but don't worry, it will go away. And if she is

like me, she also has a very pale pale complection from being sick, and

that will perk up much more quickly. If anything, i was " too skinny " by

the time I got to jr. high. Ah, those were the days, lol.

I think it is fairly normal for little ones to continue to have their

starvation bloated tummies even after switching to a gluten free diet-

I wasn't having dairy or soy or anything remotely interesting (think

fish, brown rice, and blueberries, and boiled veggies, YUCK) and it

just naturally took a long time for the stomach to go down.

Hi,

My daughter who is almost 4 was dx with celiac at 18mos. She had the skinny

little arms and legs with the big belly. It probably took a good 9-12 mos

before her belly looked " normal " , so hang in there!!

Hi, new to the site. My 2 yo daughter was diagnosed with CD last

summer. She had fallen off the growth chart and had skeletal limbs

but a bloated stomach. Her stomach is still distended 7 months after

the gf diet has been strictly adhered to. Does anyone have a similar

experience and it so, how long did it take to get rid of the

distention. Our doctor could not give us a time frame, but told us

her belly would eventually go down. Thanks! BA

Beth, thank you for your input. We have had a hard time finding

people who had similar situations. Your input is really appreciated. BA

Thanks. She is not lactose intolerant as she has been tested for

that, but she does eat a fair amount of soy protein. May try to take

that out of the equation and see what happens.

I hear you on the waistband issue. She wears most clothing below the

belly due to the stomach shape. We actually usually keep her in a

lose top for comfort without realizing it. She is also tiny as well,

but on the grow!
