It was always taller in the back than in the front and seemed a bit flat in the back. It really became obvious that something was wrong to us by two months when we noticed the back seeming flatter and his ears beginning to stick out strangely. I mentioned my concern to my pediatrician at my 2mo. checkup to which I received the regular response of "reposition and tummy time". Well, we had already been trying to repo. for a month but my son is a HUGE and strong boy and fought every attempt. Around three months we noticed bulging at the forehead and saw the back of his head in pictures and decided enough was enough. We took him to the pediatrician again at which point he agreed that the "molding" was severe. This was the first time I'd heard the phrase "brachycephaly". He then referred me to a neurologist. Instead, I did some research online on my own and fount the Cranial Technologies website. Thank the Lord there happened to be one in my city and I called them immediately to set up a free consult. I went back to my pediatrician and told him all about CT. He was thrilled as he didn't know about their existence and he immediately wrote me a prescription to go straight to CT. In the future, he said he will forego the specialist unless he sees other concerns (such as early fusing, etc.). At 4 months we saw our therapist at CT for our consultation and she confirmed that my son had severe brachycephaly (flat back of the head) along with moderate plagiocephaly on the left with asymmetry. We did everything we could to immediately line up his casting appointment - foregoing all the insurance business since we knew our insurance provider had an exclusion for cranial orthotics. He was cast within a week and banded within two weeks from our consult date. He's been wearing his band now for two weeks and we already see some slight correction to the asymmetry. The early it is caught and treated the better and faster your results! I wish you the best for you and you child... I brought it up to her ped. at her 2 mo check up and the ped wasn't too concerned. Drs will often tell you it will " round out on its own " ... though it often does not. At 3 mos she was officially diagnosed with torticollis and plagio by a ped. neurosurgeon. Unfortunately, the ped. neuro. was not pro-band so we ending up getting a 2nd opinion on her plagio at 4 mo by a craniofacial surgeon who then prescribed the band for her at 6 mo after we tried repositioning for about 2 mo. But I went home and started researching on my own and made an appt at 7mo just to discuss it. I told him that Max hadn't been on that side consistantly since 5.5months and it hasn't improved any. He gave me the referrel and said that it " obviously bothers you, so go get an assesment...it's no skin off my nose. " So I did. Max has been in the DOCband for 2 months and it's looking great! I ended up taking her to Cranial Tech for a free consult. They took her pictures, wrote a report and sent it to my pediatrician. My ped wrote me a script the day she received it. I ended up taking her to Cranial Tech for a free consult. They took her pictures, wrote a report and sent it to my pediatrician. My ped wrote me a script the day she received it. She said very casually that she was sending us to an orthotist for an evaluation to see whether he was a candidate. I said, " a candidate for what? " and she says " the helmet " . Knocked the wind right out of me. Maybe I was in denial? She advised us to skip the neurosurgeon because they tend to advise against the helmet. Of course I took him to a neurosurgeon anyway and, low & behold, that's what he did. Long story short, we ended up trying to reposition for 4 weeks and elected to get a STARband when we did not see any progress. He was banded at 4 1/2 mths - that was a week ago.
