Tina, At Dartmouth Hospital in NH, they require you to loose at least 15 lbs

prior to surgery. They believe that if you show a documented weight loss with

them then you will be committed to the permanant life style change that the

surgery will bring. Also, they try to help those with really high BMI's (60 +)

to loose to bring down their risk of complications that can result from surgery.

Hope this helps,

J

Congrats ! Keep up the great work!

Getting Closer!

I'm really getting excited now! Went to another support group

meeting at the hospital today and I'm down 10# in 2 months. (We need

to loose 15 before they will schedule surgery!) So I'm only 5#'s

away from meeting with the doctor. My plan is to have it off by July

31 when I meet with the dietician and if it's off they will schedule

an appointment!!!!

I also spoke with one of the docs who does the lap procedure and

he reasurred me he would do me (YEAH!!!) even though I've had prior

abdominal surgeries.

But get this. Dartmouth DOES NOT require any special diet or

bowel prep prior to surgery. Boy, what a relief! You all had me

nervous with your awful tales of prep and liquid diets!

So, wish me luck on the remaining 5 and then I too can look

forward to having wls!

Tina-

One of the other reasons, as explained to me by my surgeon...is that in an obese

person, your liver is much larger than that of a " normally " weighing person.

When you lose weight, initially, those first few pounds, you physically decrease

the size of your liver. Thus, when the surgeon goes in to do surgery, your

liver is smaller, and not in the way as much. Also, it starts your metabolism

into a " burning " mode...so that once the surgery is done, your metabolism isn't

shocked into it...it's already used to burning.

:-)
