Guest guest
Well, the pediatrician's big concern is that he has had bouts where he LOST weight 3 times since he was born. He is 6 weeks old and just at his birth weight. She said that if we let it go any more that we could be risking brain damage. I don't know about that but I know that he does act hungry all of the time and that he does stay on the breast for HOURS. He'll wake up and want to nurse and then nurse for like 3 solid hours before acting satisifed. I think that's why she wants us to use formula, because she doesn't feel that my milk is quite strong enough. So at any rate, we have been supplementing for 36 hours now and according to my scale he's 4 oz heavier already. He's had about 10 ounces of supplement in the last 36 hours, broken up into 1/2-3 ounce blocks. I don't even know if that means anything or not. He hated the taste of the formula, so we started mixing half and half (or maybe 60/40) roughly, formula and breastmilk. The REAL problem now is this....I couldn't get a SNS (can't until tomorrow) and was trying to other ways to supplement, cup and spoon.I was only getting maybe half an ounce down him. My pediatrican AND my l.c. said that just wasn't enough. (Yes, I have also been working with my l.c. on this. She was the one that suggested mixing formula and breastmilk.) They both said go ahead and try giving bottles AFTER I nurse him real well. So we did. He had about 4 bottles spaced out over about a 24 hour period. Now he's refusing to nurse!!!!!!!!!!! I sat and cried and and cried, and my husband came home. We tried squirts of sugar water on my nipple while his mouth was around it(per my l.c. instructions) and he latched and nursed for about 15 or 20 minutes. Then he was done and went back to refusing and crying. Now when we try that he sucks the sugar water off and gets mad. He turns his head and nuzzles but either won't latch (just cry) or when he does latch, he sucks a few times (2 minutes tops) and then spits it out and cries. I am absolutely at my wits end! I feel like I have lost my baby!! I yelled at my husband awhile and cried some more and now I am just lost.... Help, please!! Janece

Guest guest
Janece, I have not posted for a while due to having 3 kids and one who nurses all the time and will not let me put him down. My middle son and Ty, the baby, is like yours. He'll nurse forever and not take a break. I had to supplement them both too. I had prolactin/oxcitocin levels drawn on me and a thyroid pannel done to see why my milk was not sufficient. Those tests came back normal. My lc thinks it might be my stress level...I am not too sure of that. I think there is some biological issue with me and that I am one of the FEW that actually has a biological issue with nursing. My baby is 3 1/2 mo old and we are still watching his weight gain closely. He lost a lot in the beginning and ended up in NICU with jaundice and dehydration. He has gained ever since...but slowly. One week, he only gained 2 oz, but the rest were an average of about 5 oz...that's with supplementation though. He is only supplemented in the evenings and only 3-5 oz per day. Even though that's not much, he gains with it. Without it, he doesn't gain enough (the 3 oz per week min) I guess I just want to let you know you are not along and not to give up. Have you tried a periodontal syringe at breast for supplementation? It worked for us! That way, baby is able to have your nipple and not get confused and it is pretty easy. I like it better than the sns. If you want to e mail, use my personal one as I don't have a chance to read all the posted mail here. My best,
