If they are severe then the doctor should give him a prescription to help handle the pain. The ursodiol dose he is on should probably be doubled or tripled to give him the benefit of the high dose therapy (25-30mg/kg of body weight). The higher dose of ursodiol may prevent stone and sludge formation that may be causing the blockages. The other issue I would urge you to address is the infections. If Cipro is not knocking out the infections ask to switch to a different antibiotic. If another ERCP is done get a culture of his bile to determine what bacteria are present and how best to attack them. Constant infection are dangerous, and in addition contribute to fatigue and blockages. I hope your husband can get treatment that will allow him to be more active in helping you take care of all that you need to at this time. Guest guest
Jill, I'm not sure about the pain meds, as isn't on them regularly. I'd figure his pain could be spleen (if it's enlarged because of his liver, if IT is enlarged) or could be liver pain transferring to the other side ('s had liver pain radiate upwards, also, on occasion). What is the name of the person you're meeting with? We are doctoring at U on Minnesota, also. had a double lung tx here in February, and will be having LDLT here in probably September. Just so you know, the Tx Coordinator (Marie Cook) is very nice. I've only met the Tx Social worker (Suzanne Hollister) once, but she seemed quite nice, also. Dr. Humar, I believe, is who does the Liver Tx's, though I'm not sure if he does adult AND peds or what. I liked him quite well, also. Sorry I can't be of more assistance with this. Mainly, I guess, I just wanted to let you know there's someone from the group close by who understands what you guys are going through, in case you need to talk when you're here. The doctor says it is all related and he had his gallbladder removed in 2002.My hubby is on ursiodol twice a day (300mg). Since he started the medication he has had 3 billary system infections (one currently). Sometimes with terrible fever and chills. Of course the itching comes and goes. The doctors put him on cipro to deal with the infections. He can be pretty stubborn at times. He has lots of pain on his left side. Does this happen to anyone else? He does not want to bother his doctor and ask for pain medicine. So he may take leftover darvacet (which we told the doctor today). Now this can't be good for him. He wants to wait until his next appointment now that's not until the 20th of this month. This is when he is scheduled for a colonoscopy. He has had 3 MRI's, 3 Cat scans, 3 liver biopsy's and 1 ERCP when they placed a stent in the main billary tree.Does anyone take pain medicine on a daily basis? This condition he has is pretty tough and I don't even have it. He takes naps and get tired easily. It's hard being pregnant and taking care of our other children and worry about him all the time. For myself, I was on a drug related to Cipro and had to wait a week after coming off of it before starting URSO again. BTW I'm one of those for whom the URSO does a great job. In particular my GGT is now 1/8 of what it was when I started and, in general, all my LFT's are now within the normal range. This means that my wife now gets to live with a 'pink' husband, rather than a grey and yellow one of the past 10 years or so. .

The only drug interaction with ursodiol that I know of is cholestyramine (Questran), which binds to ursodiol and must be taken several hours (not days) before or after ursodiol. While cholestyramine has interactions with many other drugs, ursodiol does not have any listed interactions as reported in MedlinePlus's U.S. Pharmacopeia Drug Information at: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/uspdi/202587.html Tim R
