Re: Cholesterol medication for PSC

I can only speak of my own experience on this matter,

however early in diagnosis, I had one doctor concerned

about my high cholesterol. Later upon a referral to

University Hospital, my specialist told me he was

really concerned about the ratio of HDL to LDL and

that PSC generally showed elevated cholesterol levels,

particularly the good cholesterol HDL. I have had PSC

for 13 years now and never taken a statin.

Best wishes

Phil

I was put on simvastatin 2 years ago when my cholesterol suddenly shot up. My family doc checked with Chapman whether it was ok to take a statin and he said ok as he keeps a close watch on my LFTs anyway. My cholesterol is much better now so it seems to be doing ok.

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond to your inquiry. I am in serious lurk

mode, just having moved to a new state and home here in the US. I don't know

if you got all the info you needed about the question on statins, but there

is an abstract from two docs about the safe use of statins in a patient

w/liver disease. www.ccjm.org/pdffiles/Russo104.PDF

My Hep and Cardiologist back in Omaha both agreed I needed to be on the

therapy and I have been for the last year. I take a very small dose - 20mg

of lipitor a day. My cholesterol dropped from 265 down to 180 and my ldl

dropped from 164 down to 90. I also take meds to regulate my high blood

pressure. I hope this helps.

All the best to our New Zealand friends!

Tim,

I just had my checkup in August and my Cholestrol was

290, I see Dr. Gores at the Mayo and he was ready to

put me on something but I wanted to wait and see if I

could control it with diet and exercise...Have you

changed your diet along with taking the lipitor?

Thank,s

Liz in Fredericksburg

Welcome to the Carolinas, Tim! There are only a handful of us in this

area and we're delighted to have you here (though I surely don't envy

you the Charlotte traffic!!)

We're just 2 hours from you here in Greenville SC.

Regards,

Carolyn B. in SC
