Guest guest
Oh I soooo understand. Cats are your children, until you actually have kids. I went through something very similar two years ago, it was the first cat I had ever adopted and a very painful loss. FIV and feline leukemia are easy to test for with fairly quick results - - these should put your mind at ease. (((((((the hunny kitty))))))) let us know how it turns out. OT - I am so worried I feel sick > Please think good thoughts for my kitty today. Marc says I'm just being pessimistic and that I always freak out when something is wrong with Phil and it's always for nothing. For once, I really really hope he's right. This cat is like my own child - my FIRST child. >
Guest guest
I know how you feel. I had a cat from a baby.had her 14 yrs. i still miss her.lets hope for the best! jacquie h OT - I am so worried I feel sick My twelve-year-old cat, Phil, has had a runny eye for a couple days, but nothing out of the ordinary. This morning, I woke up and looked at him and he looked at me...and his eye was nearly swollen shut. Why? Because he now, suddenly, has huge swelling or mass under the eye. His face is completely deformed. The mass is firm to the touch; it is not pus. I've been doing web searches for more than an hour now, and this line is repeated over and over: " Facial swelling may indicate a more serious underlying problem such as cancer " Not ONLY that, but last year (as older members may remember) we briefly babysat (for two months) two cats who were evil and mean, and when their owner reclaimed them she dicovered they both had FIV and both had to be put down. Phil had an FIV test at that time, but I've since learned (this morning) that FIV, like HIV, can lie dormant in the system for up to two years before manifesting. Marc is on afternoons this week, and has offered to be the one to take him to the vet in half an hour. I can't do it. I'm too afraid. This cat has been with me for 11 years. I've had him since getting him from a shelter when he was a year old. He's lived in no less than 8 different homes with me. He used to sit in all the windows and wait for me to come home, and then meet me at the door. Of course, he's too old for that now. When Marc is on midnights, Phil braves the dog and sleeps on Marc's pillow beside me, or under the covers with me. He's letharic and dopey. The mass isn't giving him any pain, but according to all the websites, it won't. He looks so unhappy. And if he DOES have FIV, has he given it to Zot? Then again, I don't really care about Zot today -- I'm too worried about Phil. Please think good thoughts for my kitty today. Marc says I'm just being pessimistic and that I always freak out when something is wrong with Phil and it's always for nothing. For once, I really really hope he's right. Guest guest
Glad to hear Phil is doing better. I have an 11 yo old cat who has been with me since I got my own place and I would b e devastated if something happened to him. Hope the meds help Phil to feel better soon! CHRIS Re: OT - I am so worried I feel sick > PLEASE let me know what you find out. > From my days working in a vet office this doesn't sound real good. > I wish you and your kitty all the best. Thanks, Georga! Marc was right! (whew) It's inflammation from an absessed tooth. We've got antibiotics for it. Phil has HORRIBLE dental hygeniene. He will NOT eat proper cat food, he'll only eat crap cat food. He will NOT let me brush his teeth withone of those over-the-finger deals. I don't know what else to do! The vet said he should have the tooth removed, but we just paid $350 to have one removed this time last year. :-( Relieved, Jacquie

Guest guest
Jacquie, I'm SO glad you were wrong and that Marc was right. I lost one cat to feline AIDS, and we lost another to FIV. Not nice. I hurt so much when we had to put the one with AIDS down. I'd had him so long, and what an angel he was. He used to go for walks with my dad and his dog, protecting the dog. It was really sweet. Anyway, sorry it's going to cost lots of money, but glad it's nothing more serious! ellen --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Guest guest
I hate to bore everyone with talk of kitty nutrition BUT what are you feeding him? What does he like to eat? You are going to have to get the tooth removed or you are risking this happening again. And Phil is getting old in cat years, a serious infection could kill him. Guest guest
I have said for some time that cats are autistic. No, it isn't good for him. Here is what you do. Go get some Nutro-Max cat food. (Its one of the better cat foods on the market, will have to go to a pet supply place to get it). Slowly start mixing it in with his normal crap and slowly wean him off the stuff he is eating, or get him to where he will eat both. That is my best advice. What does he like to eat? He eats the crappiest of the crap. ANY generic store brand will do. We've wasted hundreds of dollars over the years with vet-purchased food, high-end pet shop food, all of it. He won't even deign to eat Purina Cat Chow, a mere rung above the sawdust he DOES eat! When he had the tooth removed last year, he ate Whiskas wet food (the kind in the little packets) and that's what he's eating today. I KNOW this food is bad for him. But I can't get him to eat anything better! In a lot of ways, my cat reminds me of my son. Jacquie

Guest guest
Hmmm.... I would say about 1:4 ratio...4 being the crap. Gradually increase it. Remember one thing, if the cat gets hungry enough it will eat what is put out. As stupid as cats are I have to see one that will starve itself. Guest guest
The funniest thing I had ever seen was the antics of this cat we used to have, Furball. My husband brought home that meow mix stuff with the middles one time and she tried to eat the middles out of them. She was strange. I suggested the nutro because I think it smells like mouse or something. Even the finiciest of cats that I have had would eat this stuff. I have had food dishes of crap food out that was picked up on the way home from work by my husband because the pet store was closed and had the cats claw holes in it to get to it. Georga Hackworth www.ubah.com/F1549 Enter to win $50 in FREE books! RE: OT - I am so worried I feel sick I would start with something absurdly small. 1/10? Maybe even just a few pieces mixed in to see if he notices. My friend had a cat who would actually pick out the other kibble & only eat her crappy one. It depends on how picky he really is. -Sara. > Thanks, Georga. I WILL try. What ratio would you start mixing the crap > with the good stuff?
