I take the bar off as a suggestion from the nurses at the hospital.

Matty doesn't just fuss during this transition, he screams. He

flails around and even refuses to feed (one time for 9 hours when he

was almost 3 months old). The nurses and I have found that he needs

to gradually get used to the bar. I put it on for a few hours and

hold him while he screams. Over the next few days it should get

better like the first time.

Also, his foot was never turned in as much as it pointed down. It

seems that his heel cord is the real problem and the shoes seem to

help that alot.

I know it would be better to not take the bar off at all, but I can't

deal with him screaming for longer then about 2-3 hours. It's like

when he had colic all over again.

When Isabella got the DBB the first time, how was she with it? Did

she fuss and then accept? Or did she scream? Even the nurses at the

hospital are surprised at how he screams over this.

I hope to have him back to 23 hours by the end of the weekend.

Jody,

I haven't been following all of your emails, so I'm not positive of what you

have been dealing with. BUT, I would be wondering if his feet were fully

corrected if he's protesting so much. Is Matty an older infant? Was he treated

by a well-informed Ponseti-trained doc? I know sometimes children just don't

like to have their feet restrained ( had small periods of this) and

possibly this is also one of those times?! However, if it hurts him to position

his feet in the shoes, I wonder if you need another doc to take a look at his

feet.

Best of Luck!!!!

Hello fellow Albertan! I am in Calgary! Nice to see another

Canadian here!

I know that Matty will adjust again. I just HATE this part. He

takes so long to adjust. If I try to make him wear it 24/7 right

away he screams (not crys but screams) for hours til he falls asleep,

then he wakes up 15 min later screaming. We found the first time

that it was best to ease him into it. Already he is wearing the

shoes no problem. He has had them on for a 4 hour stretch with no

problems. When he wakes up from his nap, I'll put the bar on for a

few hours. Hopefully by the end of the weekend he will be wearing

them full time again.

Sleeping is a whole other story. He wakes hourly when he is in the

DBB. I've tried tummy sleeping and side sleeping. Neither work. He

wore the old shoes for 5 weeks and still woke every hour. I am

sooooo tired! When he hits 5 months we are going to sleep train.

Hopefully that will work for him.

Where in the States do you get the shoes shipped from? We got ours

from Toronto.

Jody, when isabella got her DBB she transitioned quickly into them.

She just fussed every now and then but slept thru the night. I guess

i was lucky that she didn't have a problem with them. I heard that

majority of the kids fuss with the DBB and it takes a good week or

two fully in the DBB to have them get use to it. They have also

suggested to have the babies sleep on their tummy at night, some

parents on here said that it really works. I know when Isabella is

fussy and cries for just an hour my nerves are shot. I can only

imagine what your going thru and i am sorry that matty is having such

a tough time. Have you emailed Dr.Ponsetti about this and maybe some

pics of matty's feet. He could tell you more about how to get Matty

used to the DBB and if the feet are corrected right. I think i read

one lady on here her daughters feet turned down and she sent a pic to

dr.ponsetti and he told her they weren't corrected right. So i am

wondering if matty's feet truely hurt when he is in the DBB if he

fusses this much. I would definately get a second opinion on this.

Best of luck

Hey Jody. I remember how hard the initial adjustment was. iel

first realized he could roll over when he got the brace. He kicked

and screamed so much he flipped himself right over, and just about

gave me a heart attack cause he was lying on the couch! I found it so

hard because Dr. McIvor is in Edmonton and can only be reached at

certain times. And didn't have much advice or tips to give me to help

with the transition. At iel's check up we realized the bar was

too short.

Originally Dr. McIvor refered us to Kunitz Shoes in Edmonton, they

order the shoes directly from the Markel manufacturer in New York.

Dr. McIvor now refers his patients to Orthotic Consultants in

Edmonton, but Kunitz shoes still has up to size 6 in stock and are

desprite to sell off what they have left. Ortotic Consultants also

deal with Markell in New York. Where do you get Matty's shoes? There

should be someone locally in Calgary who stocks them.

Who is Matty's doctor? Have you tried lying him across your lap on

his belly? I used to do this during iel's naps and as late as I

could stay awake at night, jsut to keep the brace on as long as

possible. I would shake my legs a little and it would settle him and

go to sleep. I would even catch a couple cat naps myself.

When he's sleeping have you tried proping his legs up with a pillow

or rolled blanket? That was it takes some of the tension off his legs

and he won't notice it as much. I tried almost everything with

iel. He has only ever worn the brace at night (dr's orders).

What we did for a while and it worked was wait until he was sleeping

and then put the brace on. Each night he kept it on a little longer

and after a month wore it all night. Then I started to introduce it

as part of his bedtime routine (bath, shoes, snack, brace, story, bed)

and sometimes for awhile when he would be on the floor playing suring

the day.

Anyway I'm getting long winded here. You are welcome to check out our

Canadian group clubfootcanada. We're only a small group but slowly

growing. And feel free to email me at candice_biggin@...

That is a great idea. I will try to get some good pics of his feet

and send that with questions to Dr P. I have often wondered about

his toes. They seem different then most club footers.

Thanks for the idea. BTW, where can I get the email addy?

Re: Here we go again -

That is a great idea. I will try to get some good pics of his

feet

and send that with questions to Dr P. I have often wondered

about

his toes. They seem different then most club footers.

Thanks for the idea. BTW, where can I get the email addy?

I will try the rolled blanket under the legs. Maybe that will help.

I did try folding a small one under his legs once, but it flatened

quickly. Maybe a towel rolled up will be better. I have also read

here that some babies sleep better on their tummies, but I can't get

Matty down like that. I get him to fall asleep then when I move him

to the crib on his tummy he wakes and cries. Maybe someone has a tip

on how to do this better.

I laughed about iel rolling over with the DBB. Matty used to

roll from tummy to back all the time. Then when he got the DBB he

tried and found that his feet were heavier and he stopped. The look

on his face when he tried and couldn't was really funny!

Our dr here is Dr. Harder, but we have also seen Dr. Parsons. The

hospital just received a shipment of shoes in, but I was dealing with

a store here in town called Happyland that orders directly as well.

Maybe they do order from New York. I can't remember if he said he

ordered them from Toronto or 'out east' and I assumed he meant

Toronto.

I will check out the canadian site too. Thanks for that info!

Hi Jody-

I agree with Amy too. It NEVER hurts to get a second opinion. I know your

son is young, but can you tell if it is a screaming of pain or

frustration??? If it sounds like a painful scream I wouldn't hesitate to get

a second opinion. Perhaps he lost some dorsiflexion or degree of flexability

while out of the shoes. What happens when you move his foot to 70 degrees

outward with your hand when the shoes aren't on?? If he screams at that

point I would assume his foot needs another cast to gain that overcorrection

stage.

My son was only casted at 45 degrees after the tenonomy, so he could not

tolerate the shoes out to 70 degrees at all. After consulting with Dr. P

(not our doctor) through pictures and emails, he suggested that we keep him

at 45 degrees for 5 days, then move his foot out 5 degrees every 5 days

after that until we got to 70 degrees. The most my son can tolerate without

it being painful is 65 degrees. My son was diagnosed with loose joints and

so Dr. P felt fine with him only getting out to 65 and not needing to be

reacasted to gain the total 70 degrees outward.

Try putting the shoes to 0 degrees (straight) with the DBB on and see if he

has the same scream. If he does then he properly just isn't liking the whole

DBB thing. If he is more content then his foot properly isn't fully

corrected. Good luck. I'm not a doctor by any means just a parent that has

been " down that road " .
