Washable pads m'dear. Sounds gross... but it's not... I know some folks are so sensitive to chemicals... I didn't think that I was.. but when I heard about the suspected conspiracy... put the chemicals in the products that make the women symptomatic and then sell them the chemicals that relieve the symptoms... that just bugged me.... now top that with financial issues that just hated shelling out that much money EVERY month for product, and I figured it was worth a try.

I was a tampon user, plain, none of the extra chemical deodorizers.. and actually dreaded going back to a pad... but if you don't try something, how do you know?

Okay.. guys, we love ya.... stop here.. .you won't want to read any more.....

One of the drawbacks with being a larger person is that commercial pads are the wrong size. They are geared, if I remember right, for a woman that is about a size 8, they aren't even designed for decent 'coverage' for a larger woman. I dont' know about you gals... but I often had to wear a tampon plus two pads, over lapping, when I went to bed so that I didn't have to do extra laundry in the morning... some of you may know exactly what I'm not quite saying.

When you make your own home made pads (you can also buy ready made washables) you can make them to actually fit you.... I don't have to wake during the night to check... I don't have to go to bed with that nagging in the back of my mind any more.... I'm all set... my daytime pads are sorter and about 1/3 thinner.

The first couple of months was a 'getting used to' time frame. It was different. Seemed to be less comfortable than a tampon... a bit more effort involved.. but then I was noticing things.... I didn't get that breast pain when my period was due... I noticed that I got NO cramps or discomfort at all... I never had BAD PMS but there was discomfort..... as time went on I no longer had lower back pain... and I didn't have to be careful about lifting.... all my life, well during the years that I got periods... if I did any extra lifting or bending the day before flow started I had lower back pain and tail bone pain through the entire period.... not anymore... I can do anything that I normally do, no matter what the day and no back pain.... and the tail bone pain is a distant memory... I've been using washables for three years now.... started around January or February '03, if I remember right. Oh my gosh... I just had to go look... I emailed myself the link, so that I'd always have it.... the date on that email is January 15, 03.. the day we started this group... I kid you not.. that was the day I learned of the site and emailed the reminder to me! So I started using them my next period after that....

All I can say is that I think it's worth experimenting with to see if you are one that is being affected by the chemicals.... intentionally put there, or not... doesn't matter.. they are there, the bleaches, and perfumes and such we KNOW that those are there.... what else is in there?

so.. that said, I don't know if the site is still around... if it's not you should be able to do some googling... they also have a reusable product that replaces tampons, it's called The Keeper. Basically it's a little cup, worn internally, that captures the flow and is then rinsed out. You should be able to google that if my link doesn't work anymore..... I can't get online to check right now, or I would.....

Do tell Topper, if not using those products, how is the, um, flowage taken care of ? Always willing to get away from chemical stuff.

Hi Topper. But see, this is what I can't figure out about our grandma's era - make your own, but how do you make it so they don't end up leaking through to pants or whatever is between them and the outside world ?

I am a pad user, tampons have always irritated that tender spot. Even with pads and unscented ones at that, I have one tender crotch by the time that week is over. I soak in the tub and give it tlc. I am a large woman too, and am down to one brand that works for me, but even then, on the heavy days I am using 3 pads to cover the territory. lol!

Gee, how I wish RAI had fried my ovaries, but No !!! I remember mom in her mid 50's and still not menopausal. As my daughter said - when her period began, I told her something like we should celebrate or something cuz now she's a woman. She replied - mom, it's gross. True, so true. Periods are not the way I would have designed us women.
