Guest guest
I take Ultram...It is what I like to call a love hate drug... It either works or it doesn't...there isn't any in between with Ultram...I haven't had any side effects either. Allicia
Guest guest
Hi Lee, I have found that Relafen, also known as Nabumetone, is the safest yet most effective nsaid for me. It is in the lowest risk category of the old-style nsaids and definitely causes the least stomach burning of any of those that I tried. I've had to quit a number of different nsaids due to stomach burning so I feel I'm a fairly good test case in that I can't just take anything. I have also tried Vioxx but quit it quite quickly because it caused me a lot of edema plus it didn't even begin to touch my pain problems. It was very easy on the stomach, though, at least for the short time I took it. So I went back to Relafen, which I have probably taken for about 2-1/2 years without any problems. I don't take it every day, however, just as often as I feel I need it. If I'm having a good day, I'll skip it but if I feel the pain levels creeping up or if I'm in a flare, I get back on it until things subside again. I feel that helps to maximize the response while minimizing the risks and my GP agrees. Guest guest
Hi Lee, The Doc I have seen these last three years told me that naproxen is extremely safe. I was on it for two years and it gave me amazing results - I never did have any upset with it. Lee wrote: OK...Does anyone have any information on what the "safest" and most effective NSAID is? Guest guest
Group; From the discussions lately about NSAID's and their problems, maybe the following will help some of you having problems with the NSAID's. A Dr. writes a newsletter called " Alternatives for the health conscoius individual " and in it he has this to say: ARTHRITIS - Boswellia serrata - For some time now, my contacts in India have been telling me about a gum resin tree extract called boswellia serrata that has been successful at treating the pain and stiffness of arthritis. Recent research is confirming their claims. At the University of Poona in Pune, India, researchers tested boswellia in 42 severely arthritic patients who had failed to respond to prescription medications. After three months, they experienced significant decreases in their pain, joint swelling, and stiffness. Several patients who had been unable to perform everyday activities experienced major improvement in the first two to four weeks{J Ethnopharmacol 91;33(1-2):91-5}. The recent success of boswelllia extract has prompted additional human and animal research. In Germany, it has proven to be non-toxic and free of the side effects associated with most arthritis drugs(i.e. gastrointestinal upset and ulcerations) {Agents Actions 86;18(3):407 - 12}. The General dosage is 300 milligrams taken three times daily for the first month, and then tapered according to the patient's response. He states that a company called Nature's Herbs offers high-quality boswellia as Boswellin. It is available in most health food stores, or from Penn Herb at 800-523-9971 HTH Carol/Piney Re: rheumatic " Safest NSAID " > Hi Lee, > I have found that Relafen, also known as Nabumetone, is the safest yet > most effective nsaid for me. Guest guest
, You must not have been on prednisone. I was on prednisone and naproxen caused stomach bleeding to the point that by the time the doctors figured out the problem I had 10 blood transfusions. Guest guest
.... Hi... you're right -- I was not on prednisone, the only drug I took at the time was the naproxen. Guest guest
Has anyone in the group ever tried this 'Boswellia Serrata' for pain and swelling?
Guest guest
Yes and in my experience, it did nothing for my pain and it burned my stomach worse than Naproxen so I gave up on it after one bottle. Maybe others have had better luck but I really became concerned about the stomach burning, made me wonder just how " safe " it really is. Guest guest
Naproxen or naprosyn also now makes me ill and feels like I have a knife in my gut, and my IBS flares up really bad. It is one of the anti-inflammatories that 60-Minutes included in a story years ago about how these can cause pinholes leading to ulcers in your stomache. (included Motrin, Advil and others) I remember it was pretty scarey and am convinced that years of taking Anaprox (naprosyn) for severe menstrual cramps has assisted in damaging my stomache lining and now I can't tolerate these drugs at all. I take ginger capsules and drink ginger tea and notice it does help inflammation without all the stomache troubles. Babs
