Then I gave myself a good kick in the butt and needed to take change of my eating. Give yourself time to be sad, mad and pissed off. Guest guest Posted March 6, 2006 Report Share Posted March 6, 2006 Doreen, I can understand how you are feeling right now. My sons were diagnosed 14 months ago. I cried every day for 2 months and was a complete mess. It took my husband telling me that I needed to be a mom again for me to wake-up from this complete sadness I was feeling and slowly we became a normal family again. I was making their meals, but I could not walk by any of their favorite places to eat without sobbing. Life is difficult at times, but my sons are healthy and strong. They eat well although they don't always eat what they would like to. I keep reminding them that things could be worse. I was at first sad and then really mad at the world. I wanted to have been diagnosed with Celiac instead of them. Why were my sons having to deal with this!!! I deal with different feelings about the change in our lives from time to time, and most of the time we are all ok. Take the time to be sad and mad, and in time you will start to heal, physically and mentally. You can learn to eat GF, & eat GF and keep the blood glucose in control. You'll start to feel a gazillion times better because the absorption issues will go away. You'll stop being anemic. You'll have more energy just because of that alone. You will feel so much better that you can't even imagine it at this moment. Honest. When I think back to how much I suffered just 6 months ago, I'm flabbergasted. There are so many places and events in my life that I should associate with happy warm memories, but my ONLY memory of them is of being sick, sick, sick. My own wedding, visits to beloved friends' homes, vacations, special restaurants for special events... You name it. Someone will say " Remember Thanksgiving at 's? " ... I'll mumble " Yeah " but the real truth is I only can remember spending hours in the necessary room and being in pain. All that is gone! Sure, GF is a hassle, especially in the learning phase and double-especially when eating in restaurants. But other than that, it's a big fat " whoop-de-doo " . No pills to take, nothing to weigh, measure, calculate. Occasional follow-up blood work to make sure you're healing, and that's it! And you're going to feel SO MUCH BETTER, you can't even imagine it at this moment. Really. You'll have energy you've not felt in years. You won't find yourself constantly gnawingly hungry. Why? Because the vitamins and minerals in the food you eat will ACTUALLY go where they're supposed to go! And, since you'll be digesting well, you won't be constantly gnawingly hungry. Honest. You're going to feel so much better, you can't even imagine it at this moment. Honest. Big hugs from your neighbor in RI. (You got your results FAST!) Are you relieved? Celiac is what I've heard doctors describe as the perfect disease - they know exactly how it works and exactly what to do to treat it (eliminate gluten). No wonder the drug companies haven't been too keen on sponsoring research! Anyway, you will be fine. We are lucky in this day and age to have the internet to connect us with all this inspirational support and practical tips. Guest guest Posted March 11, 2006 Report Share Posted March 11, 2006 The good news is that 1) celiac doesn't require any medical care, so it alone won't increase your medical costs 2) celiac makes diabetes hard to control (either type) as you dont evenly absorb carbs, so you are always off in the meds you take until you go gf. once gf, most people find their numbers smooth out (but you still have to stay away from those starches). 3) unchecked celiac causes a number of other autoimmune diseases (you've already got two, it appears). Now that you can go gf, you reduce your risk of getting more. 4) About half of those with CD are overweight, some grossly so. Many (but not all) of these find that their weight starts to decrease after going gf, as they lose the constant hunger pains they had before and finally start to feel full after eating. It can still be a struggle, as you have to teach yourself to make healthier choices and limit calories, as with any weight loss diet, but at least your body stops sabotaging your effots.
