Regarding Trix & Cocoa Puffs

I just got off the phone from General Mills regarding Trix & Cocoa Puffs.

I spoke to a representative there whose name was Candace, who was very nice on the phone.

She put me on hold for a few minutes after I asked my question about the reformulation of these cereals.

When she got back she told me that there were reformulations for more whole grains --- as we all are aware.

She went on to say that any of their products that would contain any of the 8 major allergens would have the

MAY CONTAIN: statement written on the box, if any of the 8 major allergens were present.

I then pointed out that the box I had of Trix has the word WHEAT STARCH listed down among the vitamin ingredients -----

towards the bottom of the ingredient listing.

And I also pointed out that there was no MAY CONTAIN statement on the box.

I asked, why was that? If the 8 major allergens were to be listed?

She replied that yes it was indeed listed with the vitamin formulations on her box she was looking at too, but that in the process of

making the ingredients(or whatever they do), there is actually no allergen there. In that whatever they do, the allergen part is removed

from the wheat starch, and therefore is not a problem for anyone with wheat allergies & that's why there is no MAY CONTAIN statement b/c they consider it safe due to the removal process. They apparently still have to list it due to the labeling laws, but that it is not considered a

problem for those that have to avoid wheat.

Then I went onto the Cocoa Puffs question. I told her that I was wondering if the OATS part that I am seeing in parathesis

in all the boxes so far at my stores will be changing. She said that to her knowledge the oats was not getting removed.

She said it would be fine for those with wheat allergies, but not for those who need the gluten free --- due to the oats.

She had a current Cocoa Puffs box right in front of her, she said, & told me that she still saw the oats listed in the parathesis.

She hasn't heard herself that it was changing from having the oats, but that formulations do change all the time, so she really

doesn't know. I haven't seen any thing different here yet where I am in Pennsylvania about the Cocoa Puffs, so I guess I can only hope --

and keep reading my boxes. She said that, of course, the OATS will not show up on the MAY CONTAIN statement that they

use b/c it's not one of the 8 major allergens & will just be listed in the igredient list.

While I was on, I asked if they happened to have a gluten free list of their products & she said no, that they don't

keep a list due to constantly changing their ingredients and the best thing was to keep reading those labels all the time.

I have boxes of Neopets that do not list any wheat, oats, barley or

rye on them...verified by General Mills as not containing these

ingredients.

I have boxes of Cocoa Puffs that do not list any wheat, oats, barley

or rye on them...if they were there before, they are not there

now...again, verified by General Mills as not containing these

ingredients -- in that box, anyhow.

I have a box of Trix that does not list any wheat, oats, barley or rye

on it...again, verified by General Mills as not containing these

ingredients.

When it comes to General Mills, you just need to read each and every

box carefully...it varies from box to box and likely will for awhile

until the old boxes get out of circulation and they update their

website.

I have a box of Cocoa Puffs with the date stamp Sept06 on the top. I

live in VA. There is no oats listed on the ingredients label. I

didn't feel the need to contact the company b/c the product

ingredients are not of any question to me. And there are no

statements of facility contamination etc.

Ingredients: Corn (whole grain corn, meal), sugar, corn syrup,

modicied corn starch, coacoa processed with alkali, canola and/or rice

bran oil, caramel and beet juice concentrate color, salt, fructose,

calcium bcarbonate, tricalcium phosphate, corn starch, natural and

artifical flavors, trisodium phosphate, zinc and iron (mineral

nutrients), vitamin C (sodium ascorbate), A B vitamin (niacinamide),

vitamin B6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride), vitamin B2 (riboflavin),

vitamin B1( thamin mononitrate), A B vitamin (folic acid), vitamin

B12, Vitamin E (mixed trocopherols) and BHT added to preserve freshness.

I suppose the best thing to do is read the label every time and I do

mean EVERY time b/c I had not thought of this cereal as GF prior to

the mention here probably b/c I picked it up in the first few months

GF and realized it has wheat starch or barley malt as the case is with

many cereals.

I have the same Cocoa Puffs ingredient list with a box dated OCT06 on the top. No Oats anywhere. I have had three sets of eyes check. Also found the Trix. (I am in Houston, Texas, in case you wanted to know.)

Also, I was just peaking around at other GM Cereals and picked up their Honey Nut Chex which is a rice/corn chex. To my utter surprise, I didnt see wheat. Now dont get too excited yet, I was just glancing over it so I will call and check in the morning and will most definitely let everyone know!!

Maybe its only me, but every box I found says wheat

and they arenew dates on the box. I thought I was

going crazy.

I just found a GF box of Cocoa Puffs tonight at King Soopers in

Denver. I had looked at a couple of stores in the mountains over

the weekend, and at SuperTarget the other day and had only found the

ones with wheat starch. This box does not list oats or wheat

starch. The only ingredient that would have concerned me if I

hadn't been following this thread is " natural flavor " . My DS was

SOOO happy to have a new option for school (he takes cereals as a

snack without milk).

The last time I checked honey nut chex it had barley

malt in it so that is where the gluten comes from. It

would be nice if they had changed it but I doubt it:(

I'm hoping for Kix, but I noticed the label says "Whole Grain Oat Flour" so, given that they've gone to the trouble of marking it "whole grain" I'm not holding my breath....but Chex would be cool!

I've been keeping an eye on the different Chex cereals since some of

the other General Mills cereals have been changing in hope that they

will change the malt they're using...no such luck that I've

seen...yet...
