Then what is the sense of the files if it is not a SAFE place to get answers?

Then in reality all foods should be listed there, doesn't make sense at all.

I don’t know if that is in the gum you tried. We chew Extra all the time.

Food companies have the right to change

their ingredients at any time. You cannot assume that something will

remain gf forever just because it is right now. You always have to check

labels.

The thing I find most helpful is to get

familiar with the food companies that will accurately label food without hiding

any gluten ingredients. Kraft, Con Agra, General Mills, are some that

come to my mind. I try to buy from companies I know that I can trust.

I really don’t depend on lists – but – I find them very

helpful late at night or on weekends when the option to call a company is not

available. The lists are a great resource to go to for options – it

is overwhelming at first to face a whole grocery store full of labels.

The lists give you a starting point. As you become more familiar with the

diet it will become much easier.

You may also identify other ingredients

that you are sensitive to as well. Not all bloating is due to gluten –

though sometimes it is hard to tell the difference if you do not a very strong reaction

to gluten.

The only chewing gum that I have

identified that actually does contain gluten is Altoids gum. There may be

others – but I generally trust the labels on gum since most come from the

large food companies.

All you say is true but my point is this a celiac list and you would think

our files should have accurate info! Or they shouldn't be there at all...........I

am a newly DX'd and I trusted this group and got ill because I did.

No, you got ill because you were too lazy to check on a product for

yourself.

The files all have dates on them - they are snapshot of the

marketplace taken on a specific day. The volunteers who put hundreds

of hours into creating those files have no way to control or predict

changes by manufacturers, and if you rely on food lists, you're going

to be one continuously sick celiac.

And have you actually checked that the product really DOES contain

gluten, or are you just assuming that it does because you got sick?

And what makes you so absolutely sure it was it the gum? If you're

newly dx'ed and new to the diet, you might want to look harder at the

rest of what you are eating before assuming product X was the source

of the problem.

The files are a labor of love and friendship by a dedicated group of

volunteers, if you don't like 'em, then just ignore 'em. I've used

them extensively for 2+ years and never had a problem.

In defense of the SillyYak files... you do have to look at the dates

of the information... and it was accurate at that time.... However,

even though an item is on a GF list yesterday, doesn't mean that

it's safe today. We must all use the information at hand and make

an informed and educated decision on any food that we give our

bodies.

Sorry to hear about your woes with the gum. Could it have been

something else?

Our daughter reacts violently to gluten and has not had any problems

with that particular gum.

Your health is your responsibility and you must read labels for

yourself.

The " FILES " are simply a guideline for you to get started and you

should ALWAYS read ingredients and call manufacturers... regardless

of what any file or list says.... whether it is my list or someone

else's.

I know that I am grateful when anyone shares any sort of GF related

information with me... and then I double check on my own.

I suppose that everyone is not grateful for the seeds of info that

are contained on this site and if so, you are welcome to do without

it and seek the information 100% on your own.

This site is intended to be a baseline, so to speak, where people

can go and find some tidbits to use in order to life a glute-free

lifestyle....

I guess 1 unhappy SillyYak out of almost 1,500 members isn't so

bad...

Maureen,

Wow... thanks for your nice words.... It is not nice to get flamed

when so much extra time is put into this site (not only by me), but

MANY others. I appreciate all the contributions that our great yaks

do to make this site so great. And the reason it is great is b/c of

the MEMBERS..... You all keep this " machine " running nicely... I

just provide some oil when it gets squeaky. :)

It's also important to note that it's not one person doing the checking constanly here...it's a group effort and always check the dates of when something was checked. Ingredients can change in a flash, and just bc something was GF yesterday doesn't mean it is now. It's very important to always read labels.

Also, just bc you got sick doesn't mean it was the gum. I don't think that was the only thing you ate all day...maybe something you ate was not GF, or was cross-contaminated. Or maybe it was something else in the gum you reacted to...I find it's very easy to quckly blame gluten when we feel like crap, but it's not always gluten!

Dear Melnie, Almost 2 years after my dx I know that I would still be having a much harder time dealing with this goofy condition if it weren't for this group you created. I very much appreciate all the time and effort you devote to running the site.( IT'S GREAT!) So I just want to say a big THANK YOU for starting and maintaining this group and a big hug to you and all of my fellow members for helping each other, we're all in this together.
