Re: was fed Gluten but no reaction???

WOW... I would have been so upset if that had happened to

me... 'cause I would have been vomiting for days. Restaurants, I

swear...

I don't know what to say re: his possible misdiagnosis, but he would

need to be on a high gluten diet for at least a month before a biopsy

could be conclusive... But, it would seem like it would be a good

idea to consider re-testing. I have heard though that the teenage

years are the " kindest " to celiacs in that supposedly reactions are

minimized at this time, which can encourage people to get off the

diet and then pay for it later when their body isn't as quick to heal

itself. I don't know what the evidence for this is, just something I

heard my Mom say many times. Do other family members also have celiac?

I have wondered the same thing about myself. Over Christmas I knowingly ate

gluten and didn't notice any reaction yet other times when I don't think

I've had gluten I get that feeling again.

My bloodwork came back at greater than 39 and I immediately went GF for

relief. A week later when I saw the doctor for follow up, I was feeling so

much better we skipped the scope (this was April of 2005). In January 2006

my bloodwork was down to 5 and we did a sigmoid colon scope and lower GI,

both came back clear.

In my case, I am still dealing with " inflamation issues " from endometriosis.

My celiac symptoms were not GI, but mood swings and lower back pain, which

are very similiar to my endo to add to the confusion. I was hoping going GF

would help my endo like I've heard about others, but for me it's only gotten

worse.

I guess this rambling answer doesn't answer any of your questions, but know

that you aren't alone in the confusion. I do know that being GF has helped

tremendously whether I'm Celiac or just intolerant but I haven't been brave

enough to knowlingly consume gluten on a regular basis. Is there anything

else that could be going on with ? It sounds like is still

young...too young to help you track symptoms? Or if he has been GF for a

long time then his symptoms and reactions could be different?!?!? Are the

girls showing symptoms or just being testing as a precaution? Just asking

as the answers to those questions may help point you in the right direction

He's only 4 1/2 so not teen years yet though I have heard that

also. No other family members tested positive for Celiac yet but

all 3 of our kids have food issues. Emma just recently tested neg

by blood for celiac, but her stool tests show she has malabsorption

problems... So we're trying to figure out what our kids real

problems are. lol!

The same thing happened to my daughter.I think it is called the

honeymoon phase. My daughter has been gluten free for 5 years and is 7

years old now. I had made a gluten free banana bread with chocolate

chips and one with wheat without chips. Well, she came up to me and

said, " Mom, don't be mad at me but I had the gluten bread on

accident. " I felt bad for her and told her that when she got sick to

go to the bathroom. Then she said,

" I ate it yesterday. " I was shocked she did not get sick at all. She

has not had a reaction for at least a year. It worries me because I

don't know if or when she is getting gluten. The damage can still

occur inside.

At 4-1/2, he could have healed fairly quickly so it would seem to me

that his reaction could change (even diminish) fairly dramatically.

Some folks find that one oops is tolerated, but repeated glutening

brings on gradually worsening symptoms. So that's something to

consider as well.

My DD (age 13) always had severe stomach symptoms, pre-GF. Within

months of going GF, the GI stuff went away completely. Her only

symptom now of glutening is a mouth sore that appears 10 days later

(and last for 3 weeks!).

As for your Emma, it is possible to have Celiac with negative blood

tests. It is also possible to have malabsorption with gluten

sensitivity without testing positive for Celiac. No simple answers,

unfortunately.

I meant to post this earlier, but the possibility ocurred to me that the

No, it was the wrong pasta, even the chef came out and appologized

(even though it wasn't the chef's fault)

had a reaction about 40 hours after... Delayed, yes... But

still a reaction.. :( I guess that tells me that I am doing a good

job keeping him GF otherwise though because it took a long time to

get a reaction and it wasn't a bad one. A year ago he would have

reacted within a few hours and been violently ill...

How old is ? Our DD was diagnosed

at 11 yrs old. At 15 she started withdrawing, she was tired of being “different”

from the other kids. …Teenagers. So we decided to have a second opinion

on the Celiac diagnoses (please no lectures) before she spent the rest of her

life on the diet. (mistakes do happen in labs) We took her off of the diet to

do the endoscopy and waited, and waited for symptoms. There were none. The

doctor would not do the endo. Without the symptoms but we took blood work every

6 months to check her levels and he also checked nutrients to make sure she was

absorbing. He explained it to us, that sometimes teenagers will go through a

sort of “remission” (I know there is no such animal) that it would

probably return when her body goes through anything different. It could even be

brought back with any ailment the body went through. Most probably, if not

before, when she had her first child.  Well, she had an ovarian cyst in May and

guess what. She hasn’t been right since. We had the endoscopy last month

and the doctor confirmed Celiac. She is now 18yrs old and back on her diet with

no doubts this time. She’s having a rough time but she has a fiancé for

extra support and we’re hoping the diet also helps her endometriosis.

Hi,

My daughter ate 2 big bowls of wha she thought was GF cereal once. (I was

sleeping in and the kids got their own breakfast!!!) Poor thing was soooo

excited to have a new cereal. Well I freaked out because it wasn't GF. NO

reaction from her belly . She seems to react to small amounts over long

periods. I had bought flour from a bulk bin thinking it was fine and after

a few months she started regular belly aching and it stopped automatically

when I started a pure source of flour again. Go figure, they are all

different. I have no doubt she is celiac, but reactions vary.
