Peg,

The Faroes are a small group of islands lying between The Shetland Islands and Iceland. My memory is not so good these days but I think MS was unknown in the Faroes until some US airmen arrived there with their dogs during WW2.

Doesn't sound quite right, maybe I'm mixing up two stories here.

If you put "Faroe Islands distemper" into Google you'll find some info there on the possible connection between MS and distemper.

I don't have time to read it myself now, I'm waiting for a taxi to take me to the airport.

My first real holiday in years, and all thanks to LDN.

Norway's nice at this time of the year, not too hot. Can't imagine what it must be like to live in Florida, Queensland, etc. during the summer.

[low dose naltrexone] MS Onset Q/A Group

Hi Everyone,

I was dx in Mar./99 with MS. I have had MS since 1983 after my youngest was born. I lived in Sarnia Ontario which has a lot of oil refineries. At age 12 I got chiicken pox with Gendicitis (sp). I had a fever of 103 and don't remember much about this time except being too hot. Apparently I nearly died. At 16 I was raped (Trama).

So now there is enviroment and a virus, bacteria thing all going on. I was hitting menopause when my MS became very active (genetic). It seems I have had all of the activators activated.

So take your pick which one caused the MS. Now how do I fix all of it? I prefer a pill to the shots any day!

Hope all is well,

Kathy

Danny,

Have a great holiday! I live in the northwoods of Wisconsin, which is way north for the US but not at all as far north as you live. I heard that Iceland is beautiful.

Just took my third dose last night. Am anxious to see how it does. I am taking a holiday from beta-seron. No shots for a while, maybe never again!!

Cyndi,

The damned plane was cancelled this morning, technical reasons so I'm back home now.

Try again tomorrow.

I looked up the Faroes thing and it looks like I was wrong about the US airmen, it was actually British soldiers.

Guess I'm just so used to blaming eveything on you Americans.

The distemper virus is only one of a few that I've heard linked with MS,

Herpes, Epstein Barr, Measles

I've also heard that it can be sexually transmitted.

I tried pinning that one on my wife, but she wouldn't have it.

Danny.

Hi Danny, The temp. at present is 15 C at 8 pm (indoors) and was 17 C at midday (outside) BUT in summer it can reach 35 C here in Durban. Just to throw a spanner in the works, a neurologist at the local medical school has 12 Africans with MS (confirmed)and there are at least another dozen confirmed MSers in Gauteng. Everyone used to think that only caucasian got MS. But this shows that MS can and does hit anybody.

I'll end by saying SABONA ( hallo in Zulu!)

i found this but who knows what reality iscyndiMultiple sclerosis in the Faroe Islands. IV. The lack of a relationship between canine distemper and the epidemics of MS.Kurtzke JF, Hyllested K, Arbuckle JD, Baerentsen DJ, Jersild C, Madden DL, Olsen A, Sever JL.Veterans Administration Medical Center, Washington DC.Clinical onset of multiple sclerosis (MS) occurred in 32 native resident Faroese between 1943 and 1973, comprising 3 consecutive epidemics of decreasing frequency. Relationship of MS with the appearance of canine distemper (CD) was explored by serologic studies, questionnaires, and veterinarian reports. Tested were sera from 12 MS patients and 112 controls among the 22 patients and 192 controls with questionnaires in 1978-1979. The daily treatment ledgers of the Veterinarian of the Faroes 1940-1961 were also reviewed and additional Faroese interviewed 1987-1988 as to CD. History of CD was determined for residence of all 32 MS. There was no evidence of elevated CD antibody titers in MS vs controls for neutralizing titers or ELISA values, nor to ELISA for measles. In the questionnaires only one patient and 2 of his sibs reported owning (the same) dog(s) with CD during the war. One other patient reported a possibly sick dog but not CD. CD occurred in one southern village 1941-1942, was present on Vagar from 1941-1950, and was epidemic on Streymoy 1944-1945 with scattered cases there and elsewhere through 1950. There was no significant correlation between villages with CD and MS residents. We conclude that the occurrence of multiple sclerosis was not related to the presence of canine distemper or sick dogs in the Faroe Islands. On Jun 27, 2006, at 3:05 AM, Hairbear wrote:Peg, The Faroes are a small group of islands lying between The Shetland Islands and Iceland. and thiscyndiAn unsolved mystery in the Faroe Islands - amount of multiple sclerosis cases may pinpoint causeInside MS,  Summer, 1997  Find More Results for: "Faroe Islands distemper "Multiple...This is an unfinished story on which Dr. Kurtzke and his colleagues have worked since the 1960s. Unexplained outbreaks of MS were reported in isolated groups of people during World War II, most famously among the inhabitants of the Faroe Islands in the far North Atlantic. According to local tradition and all the available medical records, MS was entirely unknown in these islands before large numbers of British soldiers were stationed there from 1940 to 1945. In 1943, the first resident Faroese had an onset of MS symptoms. By 1949, there were 16 of them, or 1 person with MS for every 1800 islanders. This is the sort of statistical blip that might pinpoint the cause of a disease.Dr. Kurtzke not only assembled unique sets of data on MS in the Faroes, he has also been involved in dozens of studies since then focused on triggering suspects. They included measles, polio, and canine distemper viruses -- but none have remained on the hot list after careful statistical analyses.Dr. Kurtzke continues his study of the Faroe Island data to this day, but the cause of the outbreak may never be established until more is understood about the cause of MS itself. Rather, the studies make some theories about what causes MS much less likely.ADVERTISEMENTNeuroepidemiology, on the other hand, is now considered to be important to the effort to understand MS -- and other neurologic diseases too -- thanks to Dr. Kurtzke's skill and persistence.COPYRIGHT 1997 National Multiple Sclerosis Society COPYRIGHT 2004 Gale GroupOn Jun 27, 2006, at 3:05 AM, Hairbear wrote:Peg, The Faroes are a small group of islands lying between The Shetland Islands and Iceland. Bummer about the plane --hope you have better luck tomorrowDogs so get a neurological disease that is very similar to MS. I've seen it only in german shepard  dogs  but it could be other breeds.  I don't remember much about it but tomorrow I'll do a search. measles is something dr mcandles spoke about in terms of autism. but she spoke of it in relation to the vaccination and the fact that its a live virus with and I'm going to spell this wrong-thermirasol.cyndiOn Jun 27, 2006, at 10:40 AM, Hairbear wrote:Cyndi, The damned plane was cancelled this morning, technical reasons so I'm back home now.Try again tomorrow. I looked up the Faroes thing and it looks like I was wrong about the US airmen, it was actually British soldiers.Guess I'm just so used to blaming eveything on you Americans. The distemper virus is only one of a few that I've heard linked with MS,Herpes, Epstein Barr, Measles I've also heard that it can be sexually transmitted.I tried pinning that one on my wife, but she wouldn't have it. Danny.

Cyndi,

I'm starting to lose interest in this holiday, but I've got the tickets and the airline are sending a taxi for me tomorrow morning. When they saw the walking stick and the request or a wheelchair to take me to the plane, they couldn't do enough to help.

Not much of a silver lining I suppose, but it's something.

I've heard so many theories over the years, but none of them ever stand up to a thorough examination.

Another one was one of the strains of influenza.

Another one was the organo-phosphates that they use in sheep dip. But then MS was around long before organo phosphates were, I think.

Maybe any number of these things can trigger a pre-disposition to MS and none of them actually cause the MS.

Hell, I don't know.

My brain's just gone all "Mushy"There are folk far more intellegent than me looking for the answers, so I think I'll just leave it to them, while I'm go on my holiday to a nice cool place.

Good night,

Danny

You're right Cyndi, I think. The Thimerisol preservative, which contains Mercury, is not good. Combine it with a live virus, and for some, I think it's deadly. We know Autism rates have risen. I wonder about SIDS. I had a friend who's baby died of it shortly after an immunization. A perfectly healthy baby too. you have a wonderful holiday.  I had a dear friend with ms -he owned a tomato farm and walked behind the machine that sprayed the pesticides out on the tomatoes. also had a family history of immune disorders.cyndiOn Jun 27, 2006, at 5:32 PM, Hairbear wrote:Cyndi, I'm starting to lose interest in this holiday, but I've got the tickets and the airline are sending a taxi for me tomorrow morning.
