I am also in this stage and I have been eating lots of chicken salad

and tuna salad. I put them in the food chopper to make sure they

are ground enough. Add an egg white. Mix with a little fat free

mayo and it makes for a great protein meal! I eat mine on melba

toast...

I know what you mean about the baby food thing, the veggies and meat are gross

looking and smelling. I stuck with the fruits only!

I have one idea for you but it depends on your tastes, I made meatballs (or

buy some from a local restaurant) I would put one meatball and some extra sauce

in the blender and puree it. My family would say it looked like cat food but it

tasted really good and with all the meat was a good source of protein.

But like I said it depends on your taste buds and if you can handle the tomato

sauce.

I had my lap RNY surgery on Jan 20. I remember the pureed/soft food

stage well. That's interesting about the egg whites. During that time

I did get SERIOUSLY sick on egg yellows, rice and prime rib (later

on). Weird huh?

Anyway, what I did with regards to food and work was a bit unorthodox

and very lazy I suppose. I would buy a bunch of tubs of fat free

cottage cheese, eat some at home and have a tub in the kitchenette's

fridge at work where I'd eat a ½ cup every lunch. Maybe you'd get

sick of cottage cheese after a while or you wouldn't like the totally

fat free version but I loved the stuff. It's jammed with protein,

soft enough to go down at these early stages and yet bulky enough to

stick for a while. I would also eat tuna salad a lot. I didn't really

blend it in a blender. Chicken salad from canned chicken was and is

something I needed to eat very slowly because it seemed to me to be

denser. My cottage cheese plan doesn't offer much variety. Maybe just

try it one or two days a week. It's really easy just to open the tub

up and very slowly eat a few spoonfuls over a long period and put it

back in the fridge.

I never really got too much into protein shakes. I had maybe one or

two a week. They didn't seem to satisfy as much or as long as chewing

food. That might be because of that week and half after surgery where

I was on " the plan's " pre mixed/portioned shakes exclusively and

started to dread them in only five short days.

Tell your husband if baby food is such a good idea that he should

join you in eating some. Actually I heard it's an easy alternative to

making your own pureed food. I was worried about having to use baby

food but I guess I healed up well as I started cottage cheese about a

week and half or two after surgery. I wasn't getting a lot of fruits

and vegetables at this stage primarily because it was hard enough to

eat so much to get the protein in. I could occasionally eat a bit of

some canned pears (in water) though. I did eat some mashed potatoes

or mashed up canned beans occasionally too.

I tried to take a positive spin on this stage because it was sort of

like rediscovering a relationship with food. Previously I'd wanted to

gorge on bad food often. Now it was totally the opposite. What's more

only a few weeks previous I didn't have the pouch as a tool and had

been on the preparatory diet of 800 calories a day (argh) and then

the post-op liquid diet. So eating food again, even small quantities,

was delightful.

I dared to try even more solid food like chicken breast and ground

beef after about 4 ½ weeks post-op so see if your doctor would be ok

with you taking baby steps sooner if the texture of this stage gets

dull in a few weeks.

Buy some spices/seasonings. I would spice up my tuna salad, potatoes,

and occasionally the cottage cheese with all sorts of different

seasoning to add variety. I still do that today.

One thing I forgot Racheal was Ricotta cheese is fabulous. You can put vanilla

and cinnamon in it. You can get almond extrat and splenda.. just a variety of

things you can do with the ricotta.

I would suggest is to cut your meat in very tiny pieces incase you do

not chew it enough. Alot of people been having to have a scopr lately

I notice for not chewing meat enough. I am cuting all my meat as a

size of a pencil erraser size which help then I really chew that up

good. I try stew pureed and did not like it. What I did for pureed

was soups, chili and beans with meat and even refried beans with

cheese. I would make beans and refried beans with cheese and sour

cream it really tasted good. Do not do instanst patotoes they are

full od Carbs. Be very careful if you do not pureed up or you are

going to might have big problems.

Hi Sherri,

Thanks for the suggestions! I really like soups and chili, so those are great

ideas that I will have to try. I tried the refried beans with cheese and they

didn't sit well with my stomach so I decided I won't be doing that again. Did

you use fat free or no fat beans and cheese? I did so I am wondering if it were

because they were fat free. Before WLS, I could eat Taco Bell's refried beans

and cheese without problems. Thanks again!

Hi Shauna,

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll have to try those sugar free fudgesicles, they

sound good and I'm getting tired of sugar free popsicles. I can relate to

having a hard time getting in all of the protein and water. My stomach feels

full most of the time. What kinds of soup did you eat? I have eaten mostly

creamed soups since the surgery, but would really like to have some homemade

chicken noodle or broccoli and cheese. Thanks again and I look forward to your

I ate cottage cheese, refried beans with cheese, soups, wow I can't remember

what all.. but anything soft and protien really .. oh yeah yogart (light), lots

of fudgecicles (sugar free). I had a hard time getting all my protien and water

in, I really had to adjust to the new stomach. Best wishes.
