Guest guest
Dear Mer: There are still few surgeons that do the DS even though it is by anyone's standards the best as to leading a normal life afterwards. The RNY is quicken and more important to the doctors cheaper they can perform more surgeries per day and earn the bigger bucks. I was fortunate enough to live in So. Calif. so I had an easy access to the wonderful Dr. Anthone but when I was ready to have a hernia repair, tummy tuck and breast reduction I was in Pensacola, Fla. and it never even crossed my mind that I wouldn't be going to LA to Dr. A, now I will admit that TriCare (military insurance) didn't care much for the idea but between Dr. A and Dr. Downey (plastic surgeon) whatever they submitted cleared the way but before the time arrived my DH was transferred to Whidbey Island NAS so I did not have so far to go but still farther than Seattle to Portland. If you decide on the DS and yes I am bias I have lost 224 pounds in 18 months am I happy? You bet and I shout the virtues of the DS from the roof tops and I am in the process of putting together a letter to send to all the TV stations that handle the news stories, (20/20, 48 Hours, 60 minutes and Discovery Health) they have all done shows on the Fobi and the RNY but never a word about the DS so I will try anyway. Dr. Welker is a fine surgeon and you would be in good hands and just because he is in Portland is not a good reason to settle for a RNY the percentages for a better and normal life are on the side of the DS, the percentages for weight regain are on the side of the RNY the choice was easy for me but you have to make your own choice. Guest guest
Mer......I know Seattle doesnt have a DS surgeon.....neither does Idaho, where I am. I will have to travel to Portland to get it done I dont know why Seattle surgeons dont perform it but I would venture to guess most seem to think the RNY is easier to do. Also, if the RNY is done lap, its easier and faster and they can do several a day. Bottom line is $$$ Just my opinion. Best thing is do your research and then decide what is best for YOU. I was going to go with the RNY before I accidently stumbled into this room and discovered the DS is alot better for me. Guest guest
<<<i haven't decide if i want surgery so maybe when or if i decide there will be one..mer>>> You know Mer, there just might be......When I had surgery last Oct, there were only 12 surgeons that we knew of world wide that did this procedure.... Now, in 10 short months, there is almost 3 times that many!!! I look at it like heart bypass surgery......remember when there were only a couple in the country that did it?? Now, it's everywhere...the unfortunate thing with gastric bypass is there is a cheaper alternative some doctors feel is " adequate " for the patient..... Thank goodness for those doctors who are still willing to offer a quality of life for the patient as well, and wont settle for a surgery that is less than top notch! <<jmho>> So we'll keep our ears out for you and let you know if any DS docs show up in WA! Take care for now!! heidi *Ü* Home Page: http://www.myWLS.com Direct email: mailto:heidij@... Guest guest
Christi: You are right that we come from a ways away from Portland. But we live in San , TX., not Mt. St. Helens. About 2000 miles off. Regards. Joe Frost, old gentleman, not old fart. I believe it is Joe Frost that lives near Mt. St. Helen and is going to see Dr. Welker as well. > christynikki@m...
