Re: gum disease and Humira??

I also am on Humira. About 6 months ago my gums started bleeding and receding.

My teeth became lose to the point of waking one morning with an entire tooth

just lying in my mouth. I now have a partial denture for all of my top teeth.

Had to have them all pulled.

I cannot say whether it was from the Humira or just the RA affecting my jaw

bones though. I know my eye sight has been affected because the RA is also in

the optical nerve.

The changes our bodies go through so quickly with these diseases just scares me

to the point where I wish I could go back into denial.

and group;

I have been on humira for 3 months also. You got me checking my

mouth out real good. I haven't notice any changes in my gums. You

havent seen your primary doctor in 4 years I am presuming thats what

you meant. I know I get in trouble with my doc a lot too lol.

Supposenly with RA our immune sysytem is affected. That could be

anywhere in our bodies. I hate to think what can mess up with our

immune system. Sorry to hear about your gums receding. If it's not

one thing it's another. Take care. Let us know what is going on after

seeing your doc.

Cheryl,

RA itself is associated with periodontal disease. I don't know of any

evidence that links Humira with an increased risk of periodontal

disease.

There is evidence that too much TNF is associated with periodontal

disease, so, theoretically, Humira should help.

Please discuss this issue with your rheumatologist if you are worried.

From personal experience, I had to have 4 bottom teeth pulled because of

receding gums a few years ago. When I started suffering Sjogrens Syndrome

really bad, cavities just blossomed in my mouth. As the Sjogrens decreased,

the cavity-making stopped and the gum problems did, too. I will say that I'm

not taking Humira, just MTX, but it lowers defenses also. I've had a couple

of flares of cavities in one tooth that will have to be surgically removed,

but there has been nothing obviously related to anything RA or it's meds. I

wouldn't give it another thought, but you still should discuss it with your

Rheumy as suggested. Don't worry, be happy!!

I could not afford to have my teeth fixed either.  After years of frustration,

pain and embarrasment,  I went to Hungary..off season.

Fixing every tooth with permanent replacements and general anesthesia cost my

under 5 thousand including travel expenses. It was a wonderful experience 2

years ago. I loved the dentist.

I still have concern due to bleeding gums. I do not take humira.

OMG!! now Im scared $27,000.00 who can afford that, I dont have dental insurance

anymore??  I would love to out of the country but you know my son would want to

go and my fiance lol..cant afford that.. Thank you all for all the info, not

sure what they will say tomorrow but I will let everyone know.  By the way, I

saw someone was scared to start Humira, the Humira did not cause this I have had

periodontal disease for years now I just think being on Humira has made it worse

since Humira lowers my immune systems to fight infections.. Humira and mtx have

made me feel so much better. I manage a restaurant and am on my feet all day,

these meds combined are awesome. Till tomorrow I wish everyone sweet dreams..

If you need dentures, you need to shop around. There are all kinds of

price ranges. My husband got a replacement set of dentures several

years ago for around $500. Of course he had no teeth to be pulled.

Hi all,

Okay good news, I dont need to have my teeth pulled yet!! Next week we are

going to do a full mouth scaling, deep cleaning and she is going to start me on

antibotics 2 actually 1 first then the other. My gums are severly infected. She

measured my teeth gums to roots and its not good but after this gum cleaning

hopefully they will get better and then I go every 3 mos..uggggh but much better

than my teeth falling out. I guess I should of let my Rhemy know about this and

did not think about it.  Anyways thank you for all the info everyone has given

me and I hope I may have helped someone else with this problem or for future

problems..By the way it will be $1500.00 not $27,000.00 LOL still expensive but

better than losing my teeth at 40. Happy Holidays to all...

Prayer for comfort and relief for the Holidays,

LOVE YA, WENDY

I hope it all works out, .

It's entirely possible that the Humira could have caused the infection

to become worse. I would call your rheumatologist immediately and

discuss the situation.

Good luck,
