Guest guest
Medstar is a Public Utility Model contracted by the Authority, not the county. They serve Fort Worth and a few suburbs. Ocala, Florida does not run a PUM, Pinellas County Florida does. The Fort Worth Fire Department does not want to provide EMS. They only want a first responder role. PUMs are in general decline as many are failing miserably. Guest guest
They have not really fallen, they just have not grown (there are less than 20 nationwide). They tend to get away from the hard and fast " failsafe " model. Kansas City is having considerable problems. Reno has solved theirs. Guest guest
Both a Dallas Fire Lieutenant and a Captain told me that Med Star is indeed about to lose their 911 contract and that the Fire Dpt in Ft Worth is already starting to hire a lot of new people that will be going to Paramedic school as well as being trained in fire... Was also told that Arlington AMR would eventually lose their 911 contract also and that it would go to the Fire Dpt..... Who really knows, for now they are all just rumours I guess? Guest guest
Ft.Worth & Arlington Ambulance Service, I currently work for AFD & can tell you that AMR Arlington has contract in place to last another 6 years, they are very profitable here and the city is very happy with there performance, there are currently NO plans to kick them out. I can not speak for Ft. Worth, but I have heard many of the same rumors about Medstar. I believe that they are just that, rumors. I have many friends in the Ft. Worth FD and none said anything about a take over. Guest guest
That's why I didn't forget to put the word " rumors " in my email... those guys who told me about it might as well just be full of sh!t too, and obviously are if AMR still has a 6-year contract in place. I was thinking about applying at AMR, but I do not have my EMT-I or EMT-P yet, and I think that's all they hire. Oh well. Anyhow, was just passing on the rumours and gossip that I had heard of But Ft Worth is for sure hiring a lot of people right now.. 150 total. Guest guest
I believe that there is more fact than fiction to both these rumours. AMR might have a six year contract but the Grapevine of management from AFD are talking about going into the ambulance business. It might just be talk but there is a significant amount of chatter to support that rumour. Also Ft Worth FD is building its EMS resources which is what Grand Prarie did before running R/M out. I would not be surprised to see them in the EMS business soon also. Ruhnke, NR/CCEMT-P Field Training Officer jruhnke@...
Guest guest
These same rumors have been going around the mill for years. I don't see it happening anytime soon, though. I don't know that either Fort Worth FD or Arlington FD would want the headache of providing EMS to their cities. Moseley. Guest guest
Steph, Fort Worth Fire is hiring Paramedics because their goal is to have a paramedic on every fire truck. They do not want to take over the EMS service. Also, Rural Metro was granted a one year extension on the contract. If you would like to obtain some facts on this, please email me off of the server and I can provide you with some phone numbers to call. Also, you are correct, Arlington only hires EMT-I and EMT-P. That goes for Fire Dept., as well as, AMR. I'm proud to say that as of October 2002, the entire Fire Department became an ALS first responder system! Anyhow, if you have any more questions, that I may be able to answer, please feel free to call me. Thanks! Guest guest
I think it's interesting that people that know nothing about either of the two systems in question, feel like they have enough " inside " information to determine what's fact and what's fiction. Guest guest
Steph, You are correct, AMR Arlington only hires EMT-I & above. It would be worth the experience to get some " time in the trenches " . There is currently a move in Ft. Worth to put a Paramedic on every fire unit & that will mean a lot of hiring. This is probably still dependant on there budget, may or may not happen. The 150 currently being hired are due mainly to retirements & growth of the city, I believe they are still adding stations in recently annexed areas. Guest guest
That's funny. I work very closely with the Med Ops Battallion Chief. I also see Chief Riley and Chief sgrove on a regular basis. They have not mentioned anything about being unhappy about the service AMR provides them. I would think that they would tell US. Guest guest
, I am not sure where you get the info from, but take this for what it is worth. I have been here 15 yrs, I am also PT w/AMR Arlington, and I am frequently involved in the " inner workings " of the EMS operations for the AFD. I can state with a very confident degree of certanity that the city of Arlington & the AFD have never had, do not presently have & have no future plans for the fire department to get into the ambulance business. The administration of the fire department and the city are very happy with AMR and have been quite impressed with the performance to date. Please contact me off the list & I will do my best to answer any questions. Guest guest
, I just got off of the phone with Chief Stapp. In case you are not familiar with him (he's not familiar with you), he is the Medical Operations Battalion Chief. He is requesting that you give him a call and inform him of the " fact " that AFD is taking over the EMS service. He relates that he has not been informed of that yet. Could you give him a call and fill him in? Email me off the list and I will provide you with his phone number. Guest guest
As a FWFD firefighter/paramedic with 17 years OTJ, I can tell you that we are not interested in running an ambulance service. There are problems that have been identified with MedStar (like response times) but then again, what service DOESN'T have a few problems?! Our new chief came from Oklahoma City FD that has paramedics on all of its fire apparatus and we have been told that he would like this for Fort Worth also. Quit the rumors which only cause problems. Go directly to the source and ask some one with authority that can provide an answer. Greg Higgins Paramedic / Firefighter FWFD
