Guest guest
Netterz (please sign your name next time you post!), Yes, Kaiser has a new hoop for us to jump through before they'll authorize the procedure....at least here in San Diego they do. We have to take a 24-week 'class' where they present a ton of information (misinformation?) and monitor us while we lose the 10% of our body weight that Western Bariatric requires. We're doing diet logs, exercise logs, the whole bit, in addition to sitting in a classroom for 1-1/2 hours each week. Absences are not allowed -- if you miss a single class you have to make it up in one of the other sessions. It's a major pain but as they point out, the waiting list for the surgery is more than 6 months anyhow, and slots are reserved for people who finish the class so it doesn't take any longer this way. > What Is the preparatory class? is this something new? Guest guest
Annette, You're right of course, it is Pacific Bariatric and not Western...not sure what I was thinking. :-) I almost squeaked in under the deadline too, I actually had a signed referral authorization for Pacific Bariatric in my hands but Kaiser decided not to honor it until I went through the class. When I said they're giving us misinformation, I may have been showing some of my bitterness at having to attend the class. By and large it's a pretty good class and a decent support system to help lose the 10% of body weight that Pacific Bariatric requires. They do insist that we drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day (see http://www.the-aps.org/press_room/journal/release8-13-02.htm or http://my.webmd.com/content/article/14/1668_51096 for some good discussions of this subject), and they do push their meal- replacement supplement as being better than any of the rest because it's more 'assimilable' than the others. But again, I don't mean to overstate my case, it's a pretty useful class overall. Doug > Sorry I forgot to sign my name, It is Annette.
