Bill,

It means your kidneys are putting out protein and therefore might not be up

to par. What is your creatinine level? Most endo's do creatinine level

routinely on diabetics. I'm surprised he/she has not done one on you before

this.

Keep cool about things until you see the nephrologists and then ask lots of

questions. Have you been on any antihypertensive meds?

Microalbumin-creatinine test

My doc recently ordered lab work on me that included one I'd never come

across before, a urine test called " microalbumin-creatinine " which in my

case turned out to be 636, hence I'm being sent to a nephrologist for

further evaluation. Before I delve into more research on my own on this,

anyone on here know just what this test is all about, and how significant is

a reading of 636 versus whatever the normal is?

My appointment comes up this next week so I'll be anxious to see what the

nephrologist has in store for me, but figured it couldn't hurt to get a

heads-up on this one.

Up till now I've been managed by my GP who seemed capable and knowledgeable

enough to manage me, but I think he's finally realizing that it's time to

have me treated by a nephrologist to improve my treatment. The original doc

I had in Baltimore did all kinds of tests, but then I was on a regular

insurance where now I'm on Medicare.

The GP is having me seen now by a nephrologist (first visit next week) and

endocrinologist (also this next week first visit) so perhaps now I'll get

more definitive treatment.

Hopefully now I'll get a bit more aggressive treatment for my diabetes.

Bill, I am writing to assure you going to these new Doctors will be a good

thing. I have been a diabetic for 34 years, things are going as well as things

can with diabetes. I am going to be going a new treatment in December called

Metabolic Activation Therapy. If it works should stabilize kidney function,

help with neuropathy, which in turn helps with A1C count and blood sugars. Good

luck with your appointment, you will be in our thoughts.

What is this therapy. I've been diabetic for 62 years and have never heard

of this terminology.

Hi Bill,

The test you took showed how much creatinine is in your urine. It is an

indication of how much protein you are leaking when you urinate. Higher

levels like you have are showing some deterioration of the kidney function.

Your doctor is wise to send you to a nephrologist because he can help you to

keep an eye on it before things become too serious. The Canadian range is

8.0 to 16.0 but I do not know what the American range is. It is always good

to get a grip on it before it runs away with you. My doctor did for me what

yours is doing for you. It prolonged things Before I went on dialysis.

This does not mean that this is what will happen to you. Don't worry till

the nephrologist tells you to worry. Hope this helps.

it new? Do you know if it is fairly common and offered widely in most
