nebulizers, tubing and disinfection

Hi,

I am curious to know how and how often you disinfect your nebulizers and

tube...

In France, they're quite maniac about it...

After each use, after having cleaned their stuff, they immerse the nebulizer

into a solution of a mix of water and Clorox ( or any other disinfectant

solution, that could also be sterilization tablets) during one hour. Then ,

they rinse and dry thoroughly, same for the tubing (mostly recommend to dry

with a hair dryer).

They also use once a while the vinegar, water mix to descale the nebulizer.

What do YOU do ??

Hi ,

I don't like the idea of bringing the nebulizer in contact with any chemicals

and I've never heard that you should rinse the tubing, because it's so hard to

get it dry. What we do is (remember, we are a lazy bunch and only use plain

saline so far):

We let the compressor run for 15 minutes or more after the treatment to make

sure, that there is no condensed humidity left in the tubing.

We rinse the nebulizer with clear water and put it into the vaporizer (the same

we use to sterilize the baby bottles) right BEFORE the next treatment.

No scrubbing or drying is necessary this way and the nebulizer lasts forever. If

you have to nebulize heat sensitive drugs, you'll have to wait a few minutes

before you can put the med into the neb cup.

Bye-bye

We wash our nebs in warm soapy water after each use. Then we soak it in

vinegar and water once a week. We replace the tubing and mouthpiece once a

month.

What is all this talk about washing nebulizers? You mean, we are supposed to

wash them????

JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!

We have 2 sets of each neb cup used for each neb, we have about 25 total neb

cups that we use a day, and Ron does the recommended vinegar thing on all of

them each night, plus they go through the dishwasher as well. We also boil

them as recommmended on the American allergy site, though usually we only

boil them twice a week. We NEVER re-use a neb like they do in the hospital,

once its used, it goes into the " dirty " pile, just like dirty underwear, lol.

Our hospital, though, leaves one neb cup hanging for 24 hours, no rinses,

washes, or anything in between.

Gross, thats all I can say about that.

Take care,

Jen

Hi!

Here some more European " treatment " of nebs:

We do it similar to how Torsten sterilises the nebs. But, we

rinse them with warm water right after the treatment, then

put them into the vaporiser where they are steamed for

approx. 15 min. Then we take them out and let them dry for

quite a while. Then we wrap them into ironed cotton sheets

(small sheets...) As we have several nebs we can always be

sure they are dry by the next time we use them. We usually

have five or six of them in use in turn.

We definitely do never rinse the tubing. We let the

compressor run for a couple of minutes after the treatment

and buy a new one every now and then.

We have got on quite well with this way of keeping them

" clean " and it makes me feel somehow safe.

Oh, and every now and then I give them a good clean with

washing-up liquid to get the rests off (especially during

the time we were using Tobra).

I wish you all a nice week-end

Caroline with Talau 9 and 5 wcf

and Axel who will be back home tonight.
