Hi, Udine.

I think a lot of women are going to be reading this. So, you're not alone.

Wait and hear what your doctor has to say. Keep researching fibroids and

fibroid treatment on the web. Some grow quickly. Some don't grow at all for

a long time. The two main treatments are uterine artery embolization and

myomectomy. Well, I haven't had either one so that's all I can tell you.

Good luck with your research and with your doctor.

It seems totally inappropriate and unprofessional for the technician

to make those comments to you. Many women have successful

pregnancies with fibroids and some have to have them removed. It

depends on where they are located and how large they are. I would

tell the doctor how upsetting it was to be told this by the

technician. Your doctor should be able to explain what your options

are and you may want to see a reproductive specialist to make sure

you retain your fertility until YOU want to have children.

Hello my name is Udine and I am 22 and was just told

yesterday that I have 5 fibroids in the myometrium

layer of my uterus, I am not to sure how to take the

What baffles me is the pain I get in my lower stomach

that sometimes moves to my vagina area and cause a

a while, a couple of weeks ago I got that pain back to

Today I am suppose to have an appointment with my gyno

Hi ,

I'm also in the Inland Empire (Riverside). My gyn and health plan are

sending me to UC Irvine for a consultation (an appointment I don't yet

have), but my insurance has already denied UAE. I feel quite hopeful about

being sent to a specialist, though. Have you had any luck with

doctors? I'm very sorry to hear about the loss of your baby.

Udine,

There's no need to be afraid and no need to rush into

having children either. Fibroids are very common and

can be treated several ways. Take your time and

research all of your options such as myomectomy or

ebolization. This site will be very helpful, the

women here are great and are quite willing to share

their experiences with you. Who delivered the news to

you? That person has the sensitivity of a rock. Don't

be frightened if your gyn suggests a

hysterectomy--most do. But if he/she does, please!!!

get a second opinion.

Good luck,

Sue W.

Hi Bridgette,

My name is , and I just want to reassure you that uterine fibroids are

definitely not the end of the world, and most probably not even as dire as

you're

fearing right now--and certainly not uncommon. I remember when I was first

diagnosed I focused on the word tumor and thought the worst, whereas they're

sometimes more accurately referred to as " cysts. " There's a wealth of

information available on the internet, links to some of the more reliable

sources

can be found right here!

Maybe hearing my story might put some things into perspective for you: my

fibroids were first diagnosed 6 years ago because of excessive menstrual pain

and bleeding. I went through a round of ultrasounds and discovered that there

were MANY fibroids, not just the large one that my OB/GYN could feel in the

exam. I had a myomectomy to remove them--afterwards I was told that they

took out 35 total!!! Things went well with the recovery, but eventually some did

grow back (my current OB/GYN feels that the primary contributor was my old

GYN's neglecting to educate me about the risks of continuing with my birth

control pill prescription). Even so, with a bit of modification, they haven't

altered

my life much.

I'm also a prime example of the fact that women with fibroids can, and

frequently do, conceive, carry full term and deliver healthy babies. Even with a

uterus as compromised as mine, miracles do happen. My 6 month old darling

daughter is proof!

I know it's scary, but I hope the women here can give you all the support and

information you could ask for.

Bridgette,

I am 34 and going through the exact same thing you are. My gyno said to take

them out, and I saw a reproductive specialist and he also said myo, and he

wanted to start me on Luprin right then and there, to shrink the fibroids

before surgery. I must have some look on my face when he said that, because

he turned right around and said he would let me think about it for 3 in the

meantime they are going to check my hormone levels and so on. To top it off,

I work in a hospital, actually up until last year I was a tech in

Interventional Radiology, actually assisted in UAE's and could kick myself

for not knowing more details about possible risks of the procedure, I know

they are minimal, but of course you can't find any definitive studies on it,

I found one web site that says ufe's are perfectly safe if you want to

maintain your fertility. They have been doing them in Europe for over 8

years, and women are getting pregnant Then you go to SCVIR and they aren't

recommended for women who want to get pregnant. I can't tell you how many

books I picked up in and Noble everyone contradicting the last one. It

seems any and all facts are skewed by opinions. I feel like I'm banging my

head against the wall.....but its all part of the game I guess. Maybe because

I've always been on the other side of this. Never been the patient. I did

have teeth pulled and I was told that didn't count (by the reproductive

specialist actually)....( " a whole new frontier " ...also said by the

reproductive specialist)

Actually calling them cysts would be very inaccurate. Fibroids are

benign tumors of muscle and connective tissue that develop within or

are attached to the uterine wall. Here is a definition of a cyst: A

closed pocket or pouch of tissue; a cyst can be filled with air,

fluid, pus, or other material. Two totally different things.

Thank you ,

I am really trying to look at this as not being a

end-of-my-dreams-for-having-a-baby. Tomorrow I go in for my SHG ultrasound

and I am scared. I am so stuck on the word " tumor " it is difficult to move

my mind around it, but I am trying. I do have some questions for anyone in

the group to answer. I am 36 (will be 37 this coming September) and would

like to have a baby for the first time. When my Reproductive Endocrinologist

told some of my surgical options in order to keep the uterus intake - so I

could have a baby...well I was still worried. So my question is as follows:

1. if during a c-section the uterus is cut and in fact pulled out of the

woman's body and she is later still capable of having another baby, then why

is that chance drastically reduced when fibroids are removed?

You're right, -- I meant to say that it's my Tg levels that went up. I

still get a bit confused and say TSH when I mean Tg, and vice versa.

For the first few scans, when I was taken off my medication, I was told to go on

a low iodine diet. I tried the best I could, blurred the lines of what was low

and what wasn't, but I never had any problems with " cheating " a little. I

honestly don't remember if I had to do the LID when I had the injections,

though.

And wow, no one EVER told me that there were certain times I was supposed to

take my Syhnthroid; all I remember was that, when I had my surgery, I was put on

calcium supplements (something to do with my parathyroid and them worrying if it

had been affected), and I remember being told to take that and my medication (it

wasn't synthroid, it was something else though I can't recall the name) at

different times.

And I don't know if I have copies of medical records, etc. I'm only 19, still

under my mother's insurance and she takes care of everything for me. I think

that if we DON'T have copies, I'll get them and keep them myself.

Thanks for the info you attached!

Bridgette, I may be wrong about this but I believe that during a myo they

actually have to remove a

bit of the wall that the fibroid is in - keep in mind it is a uterine wall cell

gone wild. During a

c-section they don't have to do that, just remove the baby. Incidentally, I

don't believe that your

chances of having a baby are " drastically reduced " after having a myo. My gyn

told me that a

pregnancy would not be considered high risk, although I will have to have a

c-section, but that it

might be more difficult to conceive. I conceived the first month trying,

although miscarried which my

dr. does not think was at all related to the surgery.

I'm kind of going through the same thing right now. Last year I had

a myomectomy and the doctor who did the procedure told me that I

could deliver my child vaginally. I didn't pay much attention at the

time because I had no immediate plans for a child, however, I am now

15 weeks pregnant with my first.

When I discovered my pregnancy I phoned the surgical doctor who

reiterated that it is ok for me to not have a one but my local doctor

here told me that I have to have a C-section. When I asked why, she

told me that my incision is at the top of my uterus, where most of

the work is done by the muscle during labor. She said that during a

C-section the incision is made at the bottom and plays a far less

important roll in future deliveries thereby reducing the chances for

rupture greatly. She is supposed to phone the doctor who did my

procedure to discuss my case and I'll find out next week if I'm going

to have a vaginal birth or a C-section.

I hope this answered your question a little bit.

Good luck,

Giselle

hi brigette,

like you I am a 36 year old female who is trying to have kids but have a six

month pregnacy fibroid, that has to be removed before i do, i did get pregnant

but lost the baby due to the size of the fibroid. the first thing you must do is

find out how many fibroids you have and where they are located, then continue

searching on the internet for options on how to take care of fibroids but

preserve fertility. from the research i have done so far a myomectomy is the

best way to go, many doc's will say they can do a myomectomy but if the surgery

gets to bloody they'll have to do a hysterectomy at the same time, my two doc's

informed me they will only do a myomectomy if i also signed for a hysterectomy.

you don't want that kind of doc doing surgery on you.keep searching there are

many options, AUE ( Atery Uterine Embolization) and Myomectomy you will read

alot about both choice wisely.

good luck

Hello group. My name is Felicia. I've diagnosed with two fibroids. One

being 10 cm in size. I am 32 with no kids. I'm not married or in a serious

relationship. My gyn and infertility doctors suggest a myo. The plan is to

take Lupron shots for 3-4 months before surgery. I'm not having the heavy

periods or painful cramps. I do have muscle spams from time to time. My

periods lately have been the same. One month I had bad cramps where Alleve

didn't help me out for 2 days. My stomach looks like a pouch. Not mind you

I'm 170 lbs on a 5ft5in frame..so I could stand to lose 20 lbs. I am on the

pill. So I don't know if this one reason why I'm not having severe symptoms.

I'm not to keen on having this surgery but my doctors say it can

help me in the long run. I'm very nervous about having this surgery. Is

there anyone out there that has a large fibroid but no having any symptoms?

I don't want to wait until I'm having severe problems to do something and

ruin my chances for having kids later.

Arlene,

May I ask how old you are? I'm 46 and in exactly the same situation...I have

my gyn appt. on the 29th. I'm going to request an MRI.

thanks,

I just turned 4i this month, Deb. As I said I'm going to a specialist

ginicologist Thursday, I'll let you know how it goes. My gastro doctor said

she didn't like the way one of my fibroids was leaning on my colon. So it

will be interesting to see what this doctor feels about it.
