Dear FORUM,

The Horizons program is pleased to announce the release of the

training manual Sakhi Saheli-Promoting Gender Equity and Empowering

Young Women.

This manual is available in English and has been adapted from Progam M,

developed in Brazil by Instituto Promundo and partners, and from the Leadership

Training Program for Women developed by CORO for Literacy in Mumbai.

The manual was prepared through a two-year long participatory process undertaken

in Mumabi by CORO and the Horizons program of the Population Council with

support from Instituto Promundo.

This process engaged young women as leaders in the design and implementation of

program activities that were subsequently validated through community-based

research undertaken in the selected urban slum communities in India.

Through its activities, the manual promotes critical reflection among young

women, so they may recognize and understand how gender normative attitudes and

behaviors affect their everyday lives and can result in increasing their

vulnerability to HIV and other reproductive health problems.

We hope that those engaged in programs that aim to provide comprehensive

gender-based responses to HIV prevention will benefit from this important

resource.

This manual was funded by the Horizons Program and the MacArthur

Foundation. Horizons is implemented by the Population Council in

collaboration with the International Center for Research on Women,

International HIV/AIDS Alliance, PATH, Tulane University, Family

Health International, and s Hopkins University.

Horizons is funded by the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief through the

U.S. Agency for International Development, under the terms of

HRN-A-000-97-00012-00.
