AIDS alarm in UP

LUCKNOW: A total of 267 people have died of AIDS between January 2004

and July 31, last year in Uttar Pradesh, the state Assembly was

informed on Tuesday.

Replying to a question in the House, Health Minister Anant Kumar

Mishra said the government had initiated a series of steps for

creating awareness in people about the dreaded disease.

He said that programmes were being conducted for controlling sexually

transmitted diseases, surveillance, training and low cost community

care in the state for effective control of AIDS.

Mishra said eight anti-retroviral therapy centres had been

established at government medical colleges in the state where AIDS

patients were provided medicines free of cost
