I had surgery on Thursday, got out of hospital on Saturday and delivered a

wedding cake on Sunday. I had soreness in the abdomen and was tired, amd

took the occasional nap but other than that it was not a big deal. Everyone

reacts differently though, so you may have a different experience.

Best of luck with everything!

Kell, I think it varies a little with the individual. I was in hospital for

longer than most.... went in on Sunday, operated on Monday, home on Friday.

I think that most, though, are only in hospital for two, maybe three days.

Once you're back home the recuperation time is also pretty individual, I

think, but I'd say everyone's pretty much back to about 70% of usual speed

within two weeks, and 100% within a month. Bear in mind that you shouldn't

be lifting heavy weights, eg. kids, or doing exercise that puts any strain

on the abdominal muscles. Walking is fine. Also, you can't swim for about a

month, which is a real pain when you're getting banded in the summer.

Good luck with your decision and also with the procedure if you choose to go

ahead with it.

All the best,

.

Good point about the swimming. I had never thought of that.

I know I went swimming last week against doctors orders with my bung

knee and boy did I know about it afterwards. You forget when in the

water about strain as it feels so easy.

thank you all for your replies, don't know if I can handle not swiming for a

month! Just kidding, my husband isn't allowed to swim at all untill he has

his hickmans out (central line in his chest for his chemo)which isn't going

to happen for at least another 12 months so I guess a month isn't too bad,

is it because of the stiches? or the band itself that you can't swim?

I'm only seeing the surgon for the first time on the 13th so I don't know

how long I'll have to wait for my band yet, I might not have enough money

till winter anyway. I heard it costs $2250 plus my private hospital excess,

can anyone confirm this and when you have to have it replaced or removed

does it cost more?

I don't do paid work at the moment as I look after my husband and our 14

month old daughter full time. We are living with my parents while is

having his treatment so that our daughter doesn't have to be moved between

houses all the time. I'll try and have the band while we are still living

here so that I have the extra help.

thanks again

Kacey, it's the stitches......... you can't get them wet.

In terms of cost, that would be about right. Some surgeons charge a little

more, some a little less, but that would be around average I think.......

that is, if you have private health insurance. As for your second

question....... I am having a second band in about two weeks (first one has

slipped) and there will be no cost involved, other than perhaps a hundred or

two shortfall in hospital costs...... but maybe not even that. For

re-banding my surgeon (Prof. O'Brien) only charges rebate, so I won't

be out of pocket. I don't know, though, whether this is common practice. But

hey.... think positive....... hopefully a replacement or removal of the band

is not something you'll have to face.

All the best,

.

My first slip ocurred the day of the first banding (my lovely reaction

to anaesthetic, nothing the doctor did) and I was re-banded the

next day for rebate only.

When the band slipped again at the beginning of this year I had no

private insurance anymore and as it was emergency surgery (I

hadn't even kept water down for around four days) it was done

publically.

Hi ,

I am curious - you said that you can't swim for about a month - why

is that? It is news to me and I will be having my op. on Dec 18th.

and will be going on holidays with the kids straight after.

Hi ,

Took me a while to figure out how this site works, I decided not to

clog my email with daily updates, so I login every few days to check

out the chatter.

Thanks for the info, I am seeing the doctor on Friday so I will check

with him. Things are rather hectic at the moment, but I really can't

wait til the operation. I have to go in on the Sunday, so perhaps we

can catch up in hospital on Sunday night if you are there.

And I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the next meeting - it

will be good to get support and inspiration from everyone - but

please no-one crack any really funny jokes!
