Hi Roof

It will be nice to know. I am the only South African so far and I think

is the only one from England.

Hi everybody,

Just out of curiousity, does anybody know how many Americans and how many

Canadians and people from other countries are on this list? I find it

interesting how a list like this brings people together from everywhere on

the globe and that the issues are the same for all of us. I think it's

great!

Hi ,

Yes, it would be nice to know. Did you get the message I sent to you on

where to get a Prodigy talking meter about a week ago? If not, send me a

message and I will send it again.

Hi ,

I'm not sure if I'm understanding this. Did forward the message

about the Prodigy that I sent to you via the blind diabetics group? There

is also a machine called The Duo which is the Prodigy blood glucose meter

and a blood pressure machine all in one. It's worth checking into.

Ruth,

It seems that the only talking blood meter available to my knowledge in

England, is the Sensocard Plus.

If the Prodigy meter was to be available over here in the UK, it would need

to be evaluated and approved by the British Health Care authority, before it

could be put in the hands of a blind diabetic who would use it.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. But I have been informed that the Prodigy

meter gives you your blood results by a series of bleeps, where as, the

Sensocard Plus does actually speak to you the result, and can be repeated as

many times as you wish.

As you have only just recently joined this diabetic group. You wouldn't

have known about the problems that blind diabetics were having in obtaining

talking blood glucose meters in the UK up until the summer of last year.

For about four years, Blind diabetics in England were unable to get hold of

any talking blood meters to monitor their own blood levels, and keep their

own independence. Unfortunately, in many cases, those newly diabetics who

were blind during that period, I felt were playing a game of Russian

Roulette. Particularly for those who were having to inject themselves.

However, I was alerted to the problem of the shortage of talking blood

meters for blind diabetics was when,

A blind friend of mine, found out that he had become a diabetic, and when I

suggested he enquired from my diabetic nurse to get a talking blood meter.

He was told that the particular meter I was using was now no longer

available, and set off some alarms. Being that I had been a Diabetic for

Twenty years, and was using a Touch and Talk 2 meter, for the best of Ten of

those years, I thought there would be know problem in replacing the meter

when it came to the end of its useful working life. But how wrong I was.

After 15 months of research amongst other blind diabetics within the UK, the

RNIB, Diabetes of the UK, the Health Trades Association and other

manufacturers of diagnostics in England, before I finally had success, and

came up with the Sensocard Plus talking blood monitor which is manufactured

in Hungry.

In your Email, you were wanting some details about the Sensocard Plus meter:

Unlike some blood monitors when administering blood, this meter is easy to

apply, as it sucks the blood up at the tip of the strip, and will speak to

you the result in Five seconds, with each result giving the time that the

blood was taken. If you also need to mark a result for any reason, it is

possible to do this.

The Sensocard Plus has a memory of up to 500 results, and will give you an

average result over, 7 days, 14 days and 28 days. Also for those who like

to keep a record of their blood results on a computer, this facility is

available if you can get the appropriate computer programme for

transmission.

In each pot of strips, there is a Calibration strip, which you insert into

the left-hand side of the meter, and this will automatically set your meter

before the use of those strips.

For those who have some limited sight, it also has a large screen, with

large printed characters for reading.

One final little bit of information, if you are able to speak German, it

will also give you your result in German as well. Although, it doesn't give

results in any other language.

I hope this information has been of some help to you, and I apologise for

the length of this Email.

Hi ,

The meter you are thinking of is the Accuchek plus. The Prodigy meter does

indeed talk and tell you your blood sugar level. The new Prodigy meter

that is coming out soon will do even more than that. I own a Prodigy meter

and that is how I know that it does indeed talk not beep.

Hi ,

Just ask for the Prodigy blood glucose meter. Your voice synthesizer must

be muffled in it's speech. It's Ruth which is spelt R u t h not roof. Good

luck with the meter. You'll like the Prodigy if you get one!
