Guest guest
I don't believe I said anything about type1 diabetes. Type2 diabetes is the most common kind of diabetes, which constitutes around 95% or more of all cases of diabetes, and it is the form of diabetes that is most preventable. It is mostly caused by over consumption of refined carbohydrates in my opinion. I am a perfect example of it, having been a long standing sugar addict. re say good bye to > Hi Harry, > > You are right about the reasons for the complications being because of > the > blood sugar spikes, but that is NOT the primary reason for diabetes! Guest guest
What you say about type 2 is most often true, but I know several type 2's who were and still are thin and yet they still became type 2 diabetics. In all these cases, it ran in the family-there is a definite genetic aspect to type 2 diabetes. I have also seen whole familes were most members were type 1; yet they say it is not inherited. I am type one and there is no history of anyone in either side of my family with type 1 or 2. There are just some things that are still a mystery! Guest guest
I have mostly always been skinny all of my life except for the last few years, when I am carrying an extra ten or fifteen pounds on my frame. My BMI today is 24.8, which is in the normal range. I have always been a sugar addict. I consumed large amounts of sugar even after I became a type2 diabetic on oral medications only. It was not unusual for me to eat two or three candy bars pper day along with a pound of M & M's every day or so for snacking along with nightly popcorn and regular soda pop, say a couple of cans of Coke and polish off the week with at least one half gallon of ice cream, if not two of them. I can't count all of the pies and cakes I ate. Now chocolate, say a pound or two would do nicely while watching a picture. Of course let's not forget at least a case of beer per week. I think I forgot to mention I also usually drank at least a glass around twelve ounces of orange juice every morning. After all I was always told that juice is good for you. Once a week or so I always liked stopping by the bakery and getting a dozen doughnuts and a chocolate éclair. Apples by the bag full and oranges by the bag full did not last long around my house. Bananas were gone in less than an hour. Well of course I loved frosted flakes, Captain Crunch and Coco Puffs. If it was sweet it was for me to eat. Melons and watermelons would last a few days, but those peaches were yum yum with extra sugar and cream on them, especially if you ate along with them a few Graham crackers. After all of that I was still skinny. Do you think eating all of that sugar almost daily had anything to do with my diabetes? You bet! re say good bye to > > >> Hi Harry, >> >> You are right about the reasons for the complications being because of >> the >> blood sugar spikes, but that is NOT the primary reason for diabetes! Guest guest
How did you stay so thin if you ate all those calories? Did you exercise a lot-or not eat anything that is good you? )smile)s Re: re say good bye to I have mostly always been skinny all of my life except for the last few years, when I am carrying an extra ten or fifteen pounds on my frame. Guest guest
I think it was just in the genes for me to be skinny. I did love to swim a lot and wrestle. I love to dance. Guest guest
Hi Harry, This is a very interesting topic. I'm type 1, but my wife is type 2. Are others in your family as thin as you? Are you the first and only one in your family to consume such inordinate amounts of sugar? If so, this sugar addiction might explain why you are the first in your family to contract type 2 diabetes. If not, I wonder why you are the only one to contract it? Guest guest
I think I was the skinniest one, but no body was ever fat. When I was a kid I used to be called " bean pole " . I was raised on honey, biscuits, sweet potato pies fried chicken, and irish potatoes. My grandmother always made four or five fruit cakes at Thanksgiving and Christmas, and one of my favorite treats was Irish potato candy, which I asked my grandmother on her death bed to teach me how to make it. It did not need refrigerating, and three pieces of it would make your head spin, it was so sweett, my favorite. I loved fish fries and hushpuppies. Ice cream was always a winner. It sounds like you and your spouse have a double wammy. You can both use a low carb diet, and the type2 could use extra exercise to reduce insulin resistance. Uh ho!, I just took a bs level after pigging out on all that Italian stuff, and my bs is running high with a 132. I had better concentrate on staying in the normal range. re say good bye to >>>> >>>> >>>>> Hi Harry, >>>>> >>>>> You are right about the reasons for the complications being because >>>>> of >>>>> the >>>>> blood sugar spikes, but that is NOT the primary reason for diabetes! >>>>> The >>>>> reason for type 1 diabetes is because the islets of langerhans >>>>> located >>>>> in >>>>> the pancreas are attacked by the body's anti-bodies and killed off. >>>>> The >>>>> researchers to this day have not come up with a solid reason why. >>>>> Type >>>>> 2 >>>>> is >>>>> caused by the diet which usually overloaded the islets until they >>>>> cannot >>>>> function fully to meet the needs of the diet. Guest guest
I have 2 children, aged 40 and almost 38-and than goodness, no sign of diabetes in them. They are both not overweight (I raised them not o over eat); but I warned them to not over eat also as their paternal grandmother has type 2. I had 2 clients who were siblings and their other sibling and their mother were all type 1 diabetics. Makes me wonder if the genes for the auto immunity was inherited.
