When I was first trying to get a dx, a neuro prescribed provigil to help with

the fatigue.

I took some and had two normal days. I was so excited to find something that

worked.

But, it was temporary. I was down for a week after that.

I find that it is a lot like having a lot of coffee. It will help increase my

ability to function for a while, but it wears me out and I will have several

down days afterwards.

Taking provigil on those days doesn't even help. And it does keep me from

sleeping at night which makes things worse.

I haven't taken the provigil since I was dx by a lyme specialist. He

recommended I wait before I try it again.

Lately, I have been so low functioning, I have to admit I have considered

taking some again.

But, in the long run...I don't think it is good for me.

PS Before provigil, I was sleeping well at night and awake during the day

unless I had over done it. Then my body would fall asleep when I laid down to

watch something on TV.

I used provigil, excedrin and caffeine to help me get back to work at one

point...before being dx.

I lasted 3 days, slept around the clock 4 days, lasted 4 days the next week,

slept around the clock 3 days, and then my body shut down on me the 4th day at

work of the 3rd week.

They couldn't even get a blood pressure on me and I couldn't hold myself up.

I had to lie on the floor and just wait it out.

Elaine, they've said I have some sort of sleep disorder but they don't know

what..they put me on Provigil and I've had more daytime alertness. I've noticed

my heart rate higher but the sleep doctor and pharmacist said it wouldn't

cause it. I emailed my old Endo and he said that's a stimulant and I shouldn't

take it. He said if he had time he'd notify the company to put it on the label..

Have you heard of that? Wonder if there is anything that would help? thanks

Provigil is a drug that at least some neurologists are prescribing for their

M.S. patients who suffer great fatigue. Just how it works, I don't know. My

daughter takes it and seems energized by it, to some degree. Just looked it up.

Modafinil is the generic name, and it is evidently used primarily to treat

narcolepsy.

I've been taking it for years. It is NOT a stimulant, and does not lead to a

crash. It makes you feel more alert. I can sleep while on it. It is

considered a " smart drug " . It is key in enabling me to work. It's the one piece

of the

puzzle that does not fit , when you try to figure out the cause of this

illness. It also works well with hyperactive and ADD kids. It is coming out in

a

much stronger strength soon for ADD kids. When you take it, and you feel so

much better, you wonder why.

Hi Everyone & Naomi,

I have been on Provigil several times in the last 7 years and I found it

awful. My mind was racing but my body didn't respond at all...not tosay

that it may work for someone else.

Tell me more about Provigil (what is it?) and how/why does it work for ADHD

kids? Our son has been self-medicating with alcohol and now marijuana (he says

it calms him and he can focus better~sign of something!!!). He just asked to

withdraw from school again (second time in three years) and we have been majorly

distraught. No stress, huh? Anyway, others have suggested the Amen Clinic for

ADHD and some place in Idaho that does similar stuff, finding other alternatives

for kids with ADHD to calm their brains.

Thanks for the good info you guys always send me on this site. in La

That advantage of _www.amenclinic.com_ (http://www.amenclinic.com) is the

testing that they do to figure out which type of ADHD is at play and design a

treatment based on those tests.

Amen uses drugs, supplements and lifestyle to help bring the brain into

better balance.

Hope this helps.

I had similar brain mapping done in 2005, without the PET scsns, at

_www.pathmed.com_ (http://www.pathmed.com) THis was covered by Medicare ,

along with

a shopping list of other tests, and very valuable and helpful to me.

My brain is working much better and ADHD/ADD softened a great deal.

My greatest challenge these past few years was what I called 'scrambled

brain syndrome'. I had one appoitnment with Dr ?, U of MI researcher

now

gone elsewhere, in early 2004 and she renamed it to dysregulation of the

executive function of the brain, common she said in folks with my diagnosis.

She

also reassured me that I was not crazy.

Hope this helps.

My son is ADHD. He's now 26. He loved pushing buttons, and basically

wreacking havov. Got him a commodore 64 to push all the buttons he wanted when

he was

little. He became a computer genius, self taught. He also used it to type his

feelings and express himself. The computer is his focus. He created his own

businesses from it as a kid, and an entire social life all over long island. He

created a paid chat room subscription before any existed. He is now the head

of software development for a major computer company that we all know, and

makes 6 figures. He is engaged to a great gal and is happy. The 3 of them are

happy, He her, and laptop. The computer grounds him. It is his focus. He is

going

to retire at the age of 50 with a lifetime salary of $500,000. Not bad huh? He

takes no meds any longer. It was a tough road, but he stopped meds and

therapy at 9 th grade. He is in charge of a lot of employees and when he gets

impatient, the company he works for gives him couseling there. they know he is

ADHD,

and they don't care. If you want to e mail me privately, e mail me at

Cattttttt@... and I'll give you any info that may help. I am so proud of

him. He

is a happy, successful, nice, good person. There is light at the end of he

tunnel. You have to find their strengths and build on them.

Provigil users: When you first started Provigil did you find it

interrupt your sleep?

My teenage son just started Provigil for lyme caused brain fatigue and

ADD symptoms. When we increased from the starting dose of 50mg to

100mg his sleep was disjointed. He slept in 4 hour increments with a

few hours inbetween.

I am just wondering if this is a transient side effect or even if it

is typical.

Thanks in advance,

I have a perscription of provigil. My jury is still out on it. Can't see

to tell too much difference although I was started on a low dose. I have

been thinking of stopping it. My insurance company paid for it.

Hi,

As one who is nearly a life long narcoleptic I was fortunate enough to

have trialed Provigil (Modafinil in 1995). It has been a lifesaver

for me, not only for alertness but pain as well. It's effectiveness

diminished somewhat a few years before my MS dx, I had no idea why, I

just knew I was in pain and fatigued more often. LDN has restored the

effectiveness of my Provigil and am now more alert for longer periods.

While I can't say it will work the same for those who are not

Narcoleptic I think is is certainly worth a try. I have never had any

untoward side effects. It's only side effects have been the benefit

of some pain relief.

Best of luck,

Gigi

Sorry, now I see the med - Provigil. I have taken that and don't notice much change although some do. The med that really helped me was Cylert (pemoline) and now they have taken it off the market . It was used for ADHD for kids and found to have posssible liver problems. I wonder if Canada still sells it. Anybody know?

Years ago I was given symmetrel for energy. It is a med for Parkinson's. Don't know if it is still given for energy boosting.

Peg

Never tried it, but it always seems these meds are 'hit-or-miss'. If THAT one doesn't work, I'm sure he has another one you could try.>> Asked the Dr last week for something to help with occasional fatigue > and she prescribed this. Haven't tried it yet, has anyone else tried > this medication?>

Before I found LDN, Provigil was helping me not be a complete zombie! ;) However, once I started LDN, I found the combo of both was not so good. The LDN did give me the additional energy in the morning, but I still have/had tiredness/fatigue in the afternoon. So I thought I'd trick it and take the Provigil around noon...it worked (sort of), I then had energy in the morning and the afternoon....BUT, since the Provigil gave me a boost, I could NOT get to sleep...after a couple days of this, I was a mess and didn't have ANY energy left at all. I decided to stop messing around with it and went to straight LDN. Yes, I still get tired in the afternoon...but I DO have MS! So that just means that my body would like to rest in the afternoon..I do my best to listen to it.

For someone not taking LDN (for whatever crazy reason that may be!), Provigil is really great. Since finding LDN, I just don't see the need for Provigil. (In June I went on vacation and forgot my LDN. I still had Provigil in my purse and took that while out of town...it did help, then I went back to LDN and have been good. I also have used the Provigil when I had dental work and needed to go off LDN so the dentist's narcotics would work.)

Best of luck,

PS: for anyone who doesn't know, Provigil is something prescribed to people with Narcolepsy...it helps them not fall asleep all the time. For people with MS it really just helps us not be zombies. It does NOT help MS or reverse any symptoms, it just helps us not be zombies. Many that take CRAB drugs take Provigil.

Peg,

I ram eally behind the whole day's e-mails. I was put on Ritalin in the past for the same reason. It didn't do anything for me but it might for you.

Actually I have had more energy with the LDN and don't think I am going to need anything. Today I cleaned my boat house in 85 degree temps and was able to tolerate the heat well. Tonight I cleaned part of the house. I hope this deeps up.
