Guest guest
well you aren't the smart and bored one Robin - you're the smart and pyschic one! That's who knows psychology stuff (being recently graduated and all). I'm taking a graduate level psychology research seminar this semester to learn how research design methodologies and I'm in over my head! said she's good at this stuff! Guest guest
Kirstie, First, you need to find an area for your research. Are you going to do something computer related? I'm assuming you'll be researching some type of human behavior? Do you have access to the university library? They should have online research searches (such as PsychLit) that will lead you to research articles on whatever topic you search for. Also ask your reference librarian, or the periodicals librarian for journals--they consist of research articles. But I'd need to know your area of interest. The research I've done was on such things as self esteem (a stupid experiment!), effects of group support for cancer patients (proposal), and I've read tons of research articles on other aspects of human behavior (but not computer related!!). Have you considered the topic of the effects of online support groups on individuals who are trying to lose weight? (only partially kidding here!) My first suggestion would be to go to your periodical librarian, ask to see some research journals--they should also have a list of all periodicals that the library holds, look there for ideas of journals to seek out. I have a textbook titled "Research Methods in Psychology" by G. Elmes, Barry H. Kantowitz, & Henry L. Roediger III, 5th Edition. It's an easy reader, and introduces you to all aspects of behavioral research. I'd be very willing to loan it to you, if you'd like. I can ship it up to you, and you could ship it back when finished. Feel free to email me privately at any time. If this is the type of research that you'll be (are you writing about it or actually doing it?) working on, I'll do some more fact finding for you (online sources, journals). But knowing what topic you're interested in is helpful You'll probably have to start thinking about the design of your study soon. I like to do surveys or something that involves feedback from participants. You'll have to think about your variables (dependent and independent). But first comes your hypothesis, or research question. Do you need to write in APA format? If so, find a copy of the APA Manual, it will be your bible! Well, now I've bored everyone else!! Let me know how I can help further...Good luck (thinking how many weekends she spent writing research papers--ugh!) Kirstie Hawkey wrote: Can you tell me if you know of any good on-line sources of psych papers? I went to my first class today in that psych research seminar and most of what they said was flying right over my head. I just kept thinking "you're an intelligent woman and you can find out what they're saying later!" argh! Everybody was choosing which topic they wanted to present, and I didn't even know what any of them meant! I told him to choose me one! hehehe They'll end up doing a big 'ol experiment on how long it takes a computer science student to go insane! Anyways, every week we're going to have to find a paper on some topic and I have no clue where to start looking - I only know the good 'puter science spots! Also, if you know the titles of any decent texts on research methodology I'd appreciate them. I'm going to have to do a bunch of background reading so I can start contributing to the conversation instead of smiling and nodding Kirstie (just knowing that the phrase "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" will be her mantra this semester!)
