I have a question for you. How long were you on tamoxifen and why did

you stop taking it? Have you been getting regular periods? I have

been on Tamoxifen for a year and have had one period last Oct. It is

really unclear if I am in chemo-induced menopause of real menopause

or what! Thanks for the info.

I'm not Deb; however, I've taken Tamoxifen since March 2000. I am 53. Until this

year I continued to have regular periods - 28 to 30 days apart. My family doctor

ran blood work to see if I was ovulating - wanting to put me on post menopausal

treatments - and found that I was still in there.

I am still not in menopause but am having irregular periods so I'm on my way.

When I went in for my last oncology appointment, the oncologist said that

Tamoxifen was a sort of enhancer and that I could become pregnant on it.

Hope this helps.

Hi Judy, I was on tamoxifen for three years, since my first bout

with bc...I had not had a period for the last 18 months of taking

it..In March, I was diagnosed with a new bout in the other breast.

Tamoxifen was stopped and it was planned to give me arimidex after

radiation was completed..We all assumed I was in true penopause. two

months after stopping tamoxifen, my period returned...May 1st to be

exact...and guess what I woke up with again today???? you got

it...so it seems safe to say that tamoxifen put me into false

menopause..after stopping it, the ovaries kicked back in again!! I

will be receiving Lupron to force menopause so to speak...love,deb

What kind of " doctor " is this? A urologist, which is a surgeon, or a

real cancer specialist, an oncologist? This is not trivial; it could be

vital.

Lupron (and the similar Zoladex and Trelstar) begins to act almost

immediately, not after three months. The " shot " that has been prescribed

is probably the 7.5 mg dosage, which is claimed to be effective for

three months.

Side effects (SEs) can be variable. See this:

http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/lupron-d75_ids.htm

And also see this article on SEs:

http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/lupron-d75_ids.htm

SEs are individual. What A experiences, B might not.

And bear in mind that the SE of doing nothing could be death.

Regards,

Steve J

My urologist ordered a 3-mo. dose of Lupron pre-op for the stated purpose of shrinking my prostate prior to prostatectomy surgery. I found the side effects of the Lupron lasted about 6 weeks beyond the 3-mo. period. I have had others tell me their side effects generally lasted about 1.5 times the length of the prescribed dosage.

Thanks for the references. It is a radiation oncologist. The order came as a surprise as my numbers are pretty good. PSA @ 4.7 Gleason 3+3 - Biopsy of 4 out of 18 positive with less than 8% involvement and a clean CT scan. I'm following up today but was hoping to have more ammo for the conversation than what I have now which is zero.

Thanks for the feedback. Was there a metric that defined what an enlarged prostate is?

If you choose - what exactly were the side effects; how did they progress over the 4 months and how impactful were they on your quality of life?

Thanks for reaching out - this is no fun. Tom

My Lupron shot immediately reduced my PSA count to zero. Only had some hot flash's for side effects.

b

Lupron

Doctor has just requested that I take a Lupron shot. Said it will take 3 months to work. What has the group experienced when it comes to side effects with this drug? How long do the side effects last after you have taken the shot?Tom
