about donating your own blood before surgery, that would be great and i would

love to before my myomectomy however my iron being low will prevent it.

according to my doc. anyone else donate their own blood before surgery and

does anyone know their iron level? mine fluctuates between 8 and 10.

I also feel positive about taking the Lupron shot. I have a similar

experience to yours

Yes, doctors tend to think that Lupron will cut down on the blood loss, but that

is a big gamble. I had my myomectomy on Jan. 4 without Lupron and didn't loose

hardly any blood. I donated 2 pints of my own blood in advance. I would rather

NOT use the Lupron due to the horrible menopausal symptoms you get. Remember

Lupron shuts your system completely down. You are in temporary menopause.

Lupron is not a definite factor in a myomectomy, so I say why bother?

Lupron

I had my myo on 12/7. Prior to that I was taking the Lupron

injections for 3 months. I have read some of the post regarding some

of the pros/cons of this drug. I must say that I am glad that I took

it before my surgery. I had 3 very large tumors removed from

the " outside " of my uterus. Two were the size of grapefruits and

that was after the Lupron shrunk them. The doctor said that the

injection worked tremendously on me. Needless to say, I hardly had

any blood loss which is another reason why surgeons want people to

take the shot to cut down on the blood loss. The only side effects

that I had while I was taking it was hotflashes and they weren't that

unbearable. In my case it was worth taking it. I just works

differently on everyone as does everything else. Also, someone made

a comment about why someone had their fibroids removed if they were

located on the outside of the uterus. The fibroids that are located

on the outside can cause just as much harm as the ones that are

located on the inside. Although mine were on the outside and that I

didn't have any major problems prior to my surgery (other than the

fact that my uterus was the size of someone that was 22-24 weeks

pregnant)it was best to get them removed before they could lead up to

anything more serious or perhaps infertility.

Isn't it true that there are doctors out there that can safely remove

fibroids, of any size, without Lupron?

I wonder about hormonal swings after Lupron therapy, if this could

possibly encourage fibroid reoccurence?-- " they came back in spades! "

I don't agree with using Lupron to shrink fibroids because it may

shrink fibroids so small that they are not detectable during

surgery. Also, when a doctor tries to dig a Lupron treated fibroid

out, and there is no clear separation between the fibroid and the

uterus, what does this mean to the patient and her recovery? I might

agree with using Lupron to correct anemia prior to surgery but maybe

try this approach after all other approaches were exhausted.

Personally, if a doctor suggested that I use Lupron to shrink my

fibroids it would say to me that this particular doctor lacks skills

that other doctors possess; I would find another doctor. Other than

correcting anemia can anyone offer any other reason to use Lupron in

conjunction with fibroid management?

Maybe, it's because of the wide use of Lupron that we have so much

fibroid reoccurence?

Yes, Lupron is not necessary when you have a highly skilled surgeon.

Also, as you say, using Lupron prior to a myomectomy results in the

fibroids being less well defined or encased so the surgeon's job is

more difficult. And yes, once you stop the Lupron, the fibroids

regrow remarkedly fast. The research has proven this and the web site

www.lupronvictims.com has a page and references to this.

Dr. Stanley West and Dr. Greenberg both say that fibroids size

is not an issue when doing a myomectomy.

As well, the FDA has not approved Lupron for anemia nor as a

presurgical treatment to shrink fibroids. NOt many people know I

guess that Lupron was only approved for advanced prostate cancer in

MEN. The lupron victims site elaborates on all this and with medical

journal references. Iron is recommended to be used first to treat

anemia. THat was what my dr. used and it worked just fine.

Lupron can only be taken for a maximum of 6 months TOTAL IN ONE'S

LIFETIME.

It has been reported to cut off blood supply to the front part of the

brain which I beleive is your area for decision making and

personality.

Lupron has also been classified as a hazardous material in terms of

handling in hospitals. It is considered a form of chemotherapy.

In my case it was to correct anemia. I had extreme periods without getting

to graphic. My hemoglobin was down to 5.2. I have taken Lupron after

carefully waying the pros and cons. FOR ME I believe it was the right thing.

The aside effects have been mild.

I was also anemic prior to donating my own blood. I continued to take natural

iron pills a month before going to the blood bank. The blood bank will make

that determination if you can donate your own blood. I didn't have a problem

and my level was 11. When I donated I was on my cycle. Sometimes surgeons will

give you their opinion, but during my experience I just sort of went with the

flow. I let everyone do their job. I let the surgeon do his job, the

anesthesiologist do his job, the blook bank do their job and the hospital do

their job and everything was great. I asked questions to the appropriate

people.

Re: Lupron

about donating your own blood before surgery, that would be great and i would

according to my doc. anyone else donate their own blood before surgery and

Yes,there are doctors that can safely remove fibroids with out the use of

Lupron,but no one can

answer for what a doctor's opinion would be of any particular case.

I had 5 small fibroids. I don't think the size of your fibroids are an issue.

I read that the smaller ones were harder to remove. You are having a myomectomy

and you will be fine. I wouldn't take the Lupron. If you are having heavy

bleeding, I would take Iron pills and ask the doctor about birth control pills

for a couple months prior to the surgery to build your blood back up. You are

going to be fine. I worried myself sick and it was a waste. My myomectomy was

the best choice I have ever made. You never know whats going on inside of that

uterus and now my fibroids are removed and my surgeon was able to see what was

going on as oppose to those ultrasounds, MRIs etc. I have a peace of mind. God

Bless and Good Luck!

Fwd: Lupron

,

How many and how big your fibroids were. I am having my myo. Next months and

after I was told not to take lupron , but after reading all these comments I

am so scared if I am making the right decision.

Don't let one persons beliefs about Lupron sway your decision. I had

a highly skilled surgeon and trusted him entirely as well as used

Lupron. Lupron had fewer effects on me than PMS does and I was on it

for four months. It's entirely a decision that you need to make on

your own and try not to be biased towards someone else's negativity

towards it as you may not respond as they did. Each of us are unique.

Good luck to you.

I think before deciding on using Lupron you should check the Lupron Victim's

Network.I do not think

it is only a question of how well does or does not do on the drug, but what some

of the reported long

term effects might be.

I'm having a problem with the " skilled surgeon " but " used Lupron anyway " .I

really don't think there

are many on this list with as severe a case of fibroids(36weeks-38 in all

weighing more than 5 bls.)

+ previous myo + complications from UAE.My surgeon did not use Lupron.Lupron is

a serious drug and

although everyone responds differently you have no way to know how you will

respond or what the long

term effects will be.Once the drug is injected,if we are talking about depo

Lupron,then you cannot

dis-continue it-it must stay in the system until it wears off.If there is

negativity re: Lupron it

may have good cause and it may not be necessary to take it at all.

Best,

Bonnie

Bonnie,

I resent the fact that you are questioning the skill of my surgeon.

I did extensive research before choosing my surgeon and made the best

choice for me. I am happy with my treatment and the care that my

doctor provided and would not change a thing if I have to repeat this

ordeal again.

Each person needs to conduct their own research and then do what they

believe is best for them. You did not take Lupron so you really

shouldn't be giving advice about it one way or another.
