Guest guest
Happy annivesary to you and your husband, Kate! > We have TONS of new members! Welcome to all of you! PLease share a bit > about yourself and why you're here! I am a new member. Just wanted to join another non-dieting group to gain insight from others who are trying to apply this approach in their lives. I believe we all have to find our own way of doing this according to what our body wants!> > How long have you used the non-dieting approach? Since March of this year. I was spiraling out of control with my binges and excessive exercise. I came across an article in Prevention magazine written by Geneen Roth on sneaking food(I thank Heavenly Father everyday for this). It made so much sense!! I knew I had this problem but had NO idea why!!! I googled her name and came across her work. I have read Breaking Free from Compulsive Eating and a few other of her books. They are my favorite....i have related to them so much. Before this I was doing Dr. Phil....and although it did help me I was very sick of him! ha! I was relieved to be reading a book by someone who understood binges!!Have you read any > books on the subject -- which ones? After reading Breaking Free I found the Diet Survivors yahoogroup and have ordered many of the books reccommended by the members there: 7 Secrets of Slim People-didn't like it....I didn't need anymore " rules " Thin Within-I really liked this one but still my black & white thinking wasn't ready for a lot of it. It did help me greatly in the area of hunger/fullness. How to Survive Your Diet-same info but more of " follow what you feel is right for your body " . i did like the greed principle Moran talked about in there. And I recently ordered " The Rules of Normal Eating " because I have heard many good things about it. I am afraid to order anymore books because I think they will all have the same info just in a different format. Oh....and I have read Three Minute Therapy which has greatly helped me with my irrational beliefs. I am a SAHM of 2 beautiful children and have been married for 11 years....today! Guest guest
Thanks for that, Kate! I'm adding all these links you all post to my favorites so I can read them in depth later on! > > > Oh....and I have read Three Minute Therapy which has greatly > helped me with my irrational beliefs. > > *** Could you tell me a bit more about this, please? I read about it > on April's blog (I think), and I'm curious! )If you keep reading the Diet Survivors group you will hear a lot of people refer to it. You can even search through old messages to see how others have incorporated it into their recovery. Check out threeminutetherapy.com where you can read some of the chapters. The whole premise is our thinking determines our behavior and so if we change our thinking our behavior will change...something like that. It helped me see a lot of the " musts " and " shoulds " I had in my life that would create anxiety and that almost always led me to eating....for example....at 2pm I would always get tired but my thinking was " i must be productive and busy every minute or I might eat " and then what would I do? I felt if I didn't stay busy I would start eating and never stop(there also were some trust issues in there as well....) I didn't feel I could take a rest(although I am usually up by 6am working!) or read a book to just take time for myself....which would lead to feelings of frustration with myself and then I would eat because I would think that would make me have energy and then that would lead to more eating....get the picture? So I did 3 minute therapy on that irrational belief " i must be productive every minute of everyday " and now feel good about taking a nap or reading a magazine when I feel like it! ha! ANd when I uncovered that irrational belief there were usually a few more hiding in there that I would find and need to work through. Here is a link to the chapter in his book about Overeating. http://threeminutetherapy.com/chapter8.htmlIt took me a few tries to get the hang of it but when I did it really helped. It seems to stop the judgements and self-hatred in their tracks. It aslo helps in other areas of my life....not just my eating....but since that was how I coped with stress it all came back to eating! ANyway....there you have it! I was just posting to my Thin Within (TW) group, yesterday, about how I thought part of my problem with not getting back on track is the fact that I've not changed my underlying thoughts, yet! LOL. Now, here you mention this! ROTFLOL... Too funny! :-P I'm grateful, though! Seems to be just what I need! :-D >Here is a link to the chapter in his book about Overeating. > >http://threeminutetherapy.com/chapter8.html *** Thanks so much for the links, Kate! Seems to be just what I need! :-D I was going to mention this to anyone who is having a hard time " getting back on track " because recently I was in this same boat. I had a hard time following the same habits I have developed and my first response was to " buckle down " and recommitt but that sounded too much like my old diet mentality. I remembered that my binges were my body's way of saying " pay attention to yourself! " . Then I began to see how other disordered eating(eating too fast, sneaking, etc.) was also my body's way of screaming out for attention... So i decided to look inward and see what I was going through since when i have an inner problem it shows up in my eating. When my self-esteem is challenged I tend to sneak food for instance so when I have the desire to sneak I try to figure out where my self-esteem was challenged and fix the problem from there. Anyway....that is what has worked for me! Everyone is different! That's probably why I'm still flailing ... I keep telling myself I'll " try harder " tomorrow. :-? Body is rebelling against the " diet " mentality... >>When my self-esteem is challenged I tend to sneak food for instance so when I have the desire to sneak I try to figure out where my self-esteem was challenged and fix the problem from there. *** Yeah, I do that, too. I hide chocolate bars in my dresser drawers so hubby won't see. Bad, bad, bad! :-?
