Hi!

I'm LJ and have followed Intuitive Eating for a few weeks... I started watching my weight about over a year ago , never really wanting to diet- but relesed 30+lbs.... I would love to be down to 160 so I have 40 yet to release. I love just listening to my stomach and letting myself eat when a little hungry... I was brought up with statements like,"Wait to eat until dinner, you should be good and hungry for dinner," when wanting a snack because I was already starving and dinner was not for another 45 minutes+or-. Then she only made so much, there would be 3 of us and my dad would eat super fast, so I felt like I needed to eat fast just to keep up and get my "share." There is more but I am sure you all have similar stories- or not that shaped how you view food and eating.

married, a toddler, a pottery business downstairs on the backburner... live near ocean... pretty darned good life.

Hi LJ, so happy you're here... where do you live? I have a toddler and live near the ocean too... on Vancouver Island. I can really relate to what you were saying about being starving and having to scarf food. I had 5 siblings and it was always a race to the finish... the slowest one to eat got the least amount of food and you were out of luck. Also, we used to go to this church that would go from 6 PM till often past midnight, and I would be just famished after, but my mom wouldn't let us eat anything... I can remember going to bed with an aching empty stomach many many times... and then sneaking out to eat a huge bowl of chocolate icing in the middle of the night... LOL No wonder I'm such a mess! hahaha Anyways, just wanted to say hi... I've only been doing this for just over a month, so I'm still learning. I have a blog that is about my journey thus far (and a bunch of other stuff too... hehe) cdnwriter.blogspot.com Feel free to peruse and comment at your leisure... or not...

Hugs,

April

Welcome LJ! I'm glad you found your way here. Living on the ocean sounds great! I live in the hills of western PA.

I can understand the fast eating because that is exactly what I struggle with also. And I don't even realize it until the meal is over with. Like April, I have just started a blog about IE if you're interested in reading and commenting now and then. It's at http://nodieting.blogspot.com/

My name is , and I live on the Eastside of Seattle. I just

started following Intuitive Eating a couple days ago and I am amazed at

how much better I feel already. More energy, etc. I even went out to

happy hour and for Mexican food yesterday with friends and I stopped

right when I got to 5. I can't remember the last time I didn't eat

myself sick in that situation!

I was a chronic dieter and emotional eater. I have about 80 lbs to

release. Right now I have been using the Thintuition program to get

started because I think there are some good exercises to try, but I

agree you don't need a program of any kind to tackle this.

Welcome to the group! I, too, have only been doing this for about a

week now, but I feel like a whole new person. Just like you, it

only took a day or two for me to really *feel* different. Congrats

on your Mexican happy hour. :) I think that could be the most

challenging time-- when you're out with your friends to eat/drink.

Well, just wanted to say welcome and congrats!

Glad to have you here, ! :o)

As for stopping at 5, there are lots of tips....

* use a smaller plate (salad-size, instead of dinner-size)

* fill only 1/2 of that plate with food

* remember that your stomach is really only the size of your FIST! So, next time you eat, hold up your fist, and try to only put that much food on your plate

* fill your plate, but then put 1/2 back before you start to eat

* don't keep your food on the table ... that way you have to *think* (and get up!) before going for seconds

* drink water 20 minutes before your meal

* slow down & pay attention to your food ... you're more likely to notice your satisfied point if you do.

* it takes 20 minutes for your stomach to signal your brain that it's had enough food ... so make your meal last that long

Keep in mind that I can *give* all this advice, but I still struggle in putting it into practice. It's a learning process, and for some it takes longer than others. I've been doing IE for just over a year now, and I'm *still* struggling with stopping at *5* ... mind you, I've been doing MUCH better in the last 3 weeks. ;o)

We're always here for support, though, so feel free to write!

-----Original Message----- Personally, I am at the point where I can identify hunger and eat mindfully most of the time, and when I "check out," I am at least aware of it. My struggle is stopping at satisfied, not full , or too full. I am really battling this right now. So any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks, and I am so glad this group is here!!
