Hello everyone,

I'm Melody from cold, snow covered South Carolina. I don't get to say that

very often! I have been married for almost 31 years to my darling husband (who

I would marry all over again) and have three grown children and one

granddaughter.

I began counting WW points this AM. WW has certainly changed from what it

was when I last participated 25 years ago! Changed for the good, I might add.

Let me just say.... can anyone top the HIGH temp today of -5 degrees? Yes,

the HIGH temp. Now THAT is the frozen tundra. U Actually, it's hard for

me to get used to it to, I just moved home (Minnesota) from south central

Kansas - last year's low was probably a scalding 20.

Welcome, Melody! And congrats to you on the upcoming marriage of your son!

That is certainly a motivator! :) I didn't have any motivating upcoming

event when I joined, I just saw the photos from Christmas of 2001 and was

shocked and knew I needed to lose weight! You certainly do have a few

months to lose, and you can get quite a few pounds off by then.. :) Good

for you for joining.. I truly wish you well!

I'm , 26, from Nebraska.. btw. Nice to meet you!

Guess it is time for me to introduce myself because I can top that one. I am

joining this group from Winnipeg, Mb. It is noon and it is -23 C which is about

-10 F. Last night was a bitter low of -30 C which is -22 F or so. (without the

windchill - last I heard with the windchill it was -39C)

I have been lurking around for a couple of weeks, I am really enjoying the

conversation and am learning many things. I joined WW two weeks ago and the

denial I was in about gaining anything but I had. The painful truth when they

put me on their scale. I weighed in at 229.4. I am just so thankful I didn't

see 230. But I know how easily I could of... I am not that far away. My first

weigh in after that I lost 4.6lbs and my second weigh in is on Mon. I know I

probably won't see that kind of first week luck but I will take any loss

graciously. I have stuck stricly to plan since starting. I look forward to

getting to know you all.

if your fasting blood sugar level is 109 and greater, you are a

pre-diabetic. This does not mean you have diabetes. It does signify that

you have a better than three out of four chances of becoming a diabetic, if

you don't change your dietary habits. The good news is changing your

dietary habits can prevent you from ever becoming a diabetic in the first

place. While there are strong genetic or familial links to this dreaded

disease, it still remains mainly a disease caused by personal habits.

Habits like the high consumption of refined carbohydrates like sugar, flour

(all things made with flour like bread, cake, pasta, pie, cookies, etc.),

corn meal, fruit juice, soda pop, candy. It would be wise to severely

restrict the consumption of these items, if not eliminate them altogether.

Ice cream is another no no. If it is white it is full of carbs. This

includes milk and french fries.

Eat lots of meats, fish and fowl along with vegetables, whole grains, nuts,

cheeses, whole fruits. Yes, you can prevent yourself from becoming a

diabetic by following these simple recommendations.

Welcome, Tammy

Well those are certainly a couple of the symptoms of diabetes! Does it run

in your family? We can help with suggestions here, but the total care of

yourself is up to you. Attitude is very important-if you make yourself

realize that you can beat the diabetes, half the battle is over! Let us

know about the results.

Well, here's what I found out.

They did the fasting blood glucose, which was 80. They also did a

hemoglobin test, (I know I didn't spell that right). That was 5.5. They

did recommend that I have the oral Glucose Tolerance test, because of the

symptoms I am having. The nurse said that all these results are normal.

With an A1C of 5.5 or lower, it is very doubtful that you have diabetes or

will ever have it, provided you keep this A1C reading at this level or

lower.

Hi, tammy

Those results are within normal limits. But many times, 5.5 can be

considered high-normal. I would recommend the other test. I hope you do

not have itthough! But if you are overweight, it would be a good idea to

lose-especially if diabetes runs in your family.

I'd modify that slightly. Rather than saying that one can prevent

becoming a type 2 diabetic, I'd say that one can significantly lessen

one's chances of becoming one -- *if* one makes the needed lifestyle

changes. And many who *do* make those changes never go on to diabetes.

Sadly, however, many who could prevent diabetes don't because they

aren't moved to make the lifestyle changes until too late.

Yes, I am one of those that was not taught prevention. I was taught keep on

as you are until you really have a problem like diabetes for sure, then we

can do something about it like prescribe drugs. Yeah, that works, too.

Hi Harry and long time no speak as I've been quiet on list but I have a quiry;

This morning I went ahead and eat my breakfast of sweetened cearl and mixed

unsweetened combined cearals and as a result, got a sugar reading of about

9.3 which is much higher than my norm of about 6.5 to 7.5 and was alarmed but

that's not the point, after eating this stuff later at about 4 hours after the

mistake, I began to feel a reaction as I grew weakened...you know, the

weakness in my legs, a shaking in my stomach, a further weakness in my arms.

Of course, I felt much better after having two sandwhiches and a couple of

medium sweetened cinnamon swirls and a cup of hot chocolate. I am wondered

why I got a rreaction as I had too much sugar, obviously, in my system! You'd

think that after the sugar buildupI'd be feeling nothing! What happened? Still

in the darkness re this experience. Any help would be welcomed. I'm usually

good at keeping my sugars down but not this time! TXS; Ken Buxton in Toronto.
