My husband AND my english bulldog are without a doubt, the cause of a lot of my sleeping (or lack of) problems. It is so bad that my hubby finally mentioned it to our family doctor and was sent for a sleep study a few weeks ago. He was hooked to so many different things that he said he felt like a laboratory rat. They recorded over 40 episodes where he quit breathing for an extended period of time. He is going back this coming Monday night to do it again with the help of this special breathing apparatus that they will adjust throughout the night to find the setting that is best suited for him and then he will bring the machine home to use at night. Maybe they can find one suitable for my dog too and then I can get some sleep as well !!!! I did however go out and purchase myself a feather bed this past weekend. It is WONDERFUL and I LOVE IT !!! I call it my " nest. " What a difference it makes on the old muscles and joints !!! Coupled with hubby's new snore ceasing machine, I am anticipating next week to be DREAMY !!!!!! Cant wait !!!!! I guess I rip them out in the middle of the night and they become cat toys !!!!! Then my ears hurt the whole next day !!! My cats knead me !!!! Hey, you got the feather bed, good for you... it's just like sleeping on a cloud. I love mine and now I wouldn't be without it. Makes such a difference. Fern, If you have only tried the hard plastic kind of earplugs, I can understand this. They are uncomfortable, and I cannot imagine wearing them for more than a few minutes at a time, never mind over night, every night. However, there are other kids of ear plugs available that you might be able to wear. You may want to visit the sporting goods section and buy some shooter's disposable foam ear plugs. They are quite comfortable and effective, and are also inexpensive. I always carry a package of these in my range bag in case I forget my muffs. You may also want to look into soft, silicone ear plugs. An ENT specialist should be able to get you some that are custom fit and filter noise very well. These are designed to be worn for an extended time and are supposed to be extremely comfortable. Of course, your husband should still get his sleep issues looked at, but a good set of plugs could let you get some rest. He stopped breathing and average of 40 times an hour! He no longer uses the machine. He lost weight and that helps. Make sure your husband asks for a machine that blows warm air. They were just coming out with the warm air type when my husband was put on one and we were unable to get a hold of one. That was 4 years ago. Jeff's blew very cold air. That made it quite uncomfortable. He wished very much for the warm air type. Let me know how your husband does on the machine. I am very curious to know. Guest guest Posted February 9, 2001 Report Share Posted February 9, 2001 , I know without a doubt that my husband has sleep apnea and needs to have it treated. I just cannot get him to go do it. He doesn't have a weight problem and he doesn't drink any alcohol, so it isn't coming from those things. He does snore worse when his sinuses are bothering him and especially when he is very tired. I am afraid I cannot use earplugs because I have problems with my ears and it causes them to hurt tremendously. Until I convince him to go get this checked out, I will have to resort to moving into the guest room on nights when I cannot sleep. Guest guest Posted February 9, 2001 Report Share Posted February 9, 2001 Ralph, The ear plugs I tried were the soft foam ones. I borrowed some of my husband's. He uses them when he uses the big tractor in the summer to cut the fields. I think the reason I have trouble with them is that I have been having problems with infections and irritation of my ear canal, so anything that touches it or puts pressure on it hurts. Maybe if I had some custom fit, I could wear them. However, I would rather my husband go see the doctor instead since I feel he is putting his health at risk by not getting this checked out. I know he stops breathing during the night numerous times and he complains of being tired all the time and I am sure that is why. He is probably getting less sleep than I am. At least when his snoring is minimal, I get pretty good sleep since I take a sleeping pill. Thanks for the suggestions. At least his ribs and legs wont be sore any more from me whacking him all night to turn over !!!! I will also mention to him about the warm air version. Is seriously overweight, maybe he's stealing my prednisone (?) Lucky for me, he sleeps in the guest room, and I close my door and don't hear him. He could wake dead.
