Guest guest
That is very concerning. Question: Who can we contact and work with in the UK that can speak up against this, both NT and autistic? I'm asking in reference to both organizations and individuals, incidentally. -Ari > > I hope they don't try to pass this off as typical of AS/autism. > > ------ > > from AutismConnect (April 25): > > Two of Britain's leading actors, Spall and > Blethyn, are to star in a prime-time TV drama, Mysterious Creatures, > about a real-life suicide pact couple, Bill and Ainscow, whose > life was torn apart by their daughter 's Asperger's syndrome and > her addiction to spending money. > > 's obsessions with shoes - she had almost 2,000 pairs - and > cuddly toys left the Ainscows with crippling debt. Guest guest
That's really an exceptional case. In that it is the exception, not the rule. Most Aspergers aren't like that...I don't claim I'll commit suicide if I don't get my Star Trek fix... Parents are just one of the many groups that would benefit from a proper education about Autism, and how to deal with Autistic people. (Delivering such an education is one of my goals) > > That is very concerning. Question: Who can we contact and work with in the > UK that can speak up against this, both NT and autistic? Guest guest
Hi You out there, do realise the reason for her addition to spending money. If you are intelegent and have Aspergers Syndrome, you need to have contact with people. The only way for many of us to get contact is to spend money. When we are not spending money we find ourselves shunned by everyone. If that's what was going on in this case, then someone (one of the people paid to provide services to the disabled, perhaps) should have helped the young woman find other ways to interact with the world. Interest groups, volunteer work, whatever. Habits are extremely hard to break, and when habits have formed around special interests, they may be very very hard to break. But nevertheless..... Guest guest
that is really profound! I knew my spending problems were attached to my OCD style of doing any task and that impulse control added to that means I will over spend... but I have often thought over the years that it is really expensive to have friends... althought possible that's because I fall into circles that socialize in public and with outings, not just visiting each other and like that... but yeah, sometimes the only people I talk to are clerks.... and I'm a very socialable person. dani Diane Kivi wrote: >Hi > >You out there, do realise the reason for her addition >to spending money. Guest guest
That's a good point. I knew an Aspie from a summer program that was all too generous with money to the people around him, because his " friends " at school only stuck by him as long as he was buying them things. It's a concerning trend and one that requires education: partially of them but just as much of us. Our community has to teach young Aspies how not to be exploited by the sort of untoward people that will unfortunately always be there. > > Hi > > You out there, do realise the reason for her addition > to spending money. Guest guest
Hi I also find that I cannot decide in other social situations when people are taking advantage of me. I know when I spend money, that I am being taken advantage of, but I have more control of the situation. Also I cannot see the links between people, thus in normal social situations I often say the wrong thing to the wrong person. Thus the situation will explode in my face.
