That is a mighty interesting question! I was told by several neurologist

that ACM was in fact a " birth trauma " ...as in the mother had a very difficult

or long delivery and perhaps a C-section should have been done. But since I

have been on this list just a short week or so, I have seen many members who

have a relative with this disorder (child or grandchild, etc). What is the

verdict gang? Is it genetic, a birth defect or in fact, a birth trauma?

Lets just say it is ALL of the above....It can be just a birth defect, it can

result from a trauma and I think the families with it on the list prove

without a doubt that it can be and is genetic....

IMHO it could be either or both...I think there is danger in defining it one way

or the other.......

Hi,

I am going with Birth Defect, and the

possiblity that it could be caused by

Trauma. But not the type of Trauma

that the Baby goes through when

it is being Born.

Just my opinion.

Take Care,

grandchild, etc). What is the

I agree..... I also believe that there could be sort of a combination situation.

Where someone has the genetics of a somewhat smaller then " average " skull

case....this in itself might be fine...no real symptoms...but then add a trauma,

birth or otherwise......one or multiple...and we have symptomatic ACM......

Works for me.... <g>

Sally R....non-symptomatic til 44....product of a very difficult

birth....multiple head traumas in between ;-}

Hi,

I think it can happen in both instances....some are born with it and

some can have acquired ACM from trauma/accident etc. I have it, my dad has

it and my son is showing signs of it and will be acessed soon. Now my

friend was involved in a car accident (a rollover) and acquired it from

Yes I have acm and have been decompressed, my eldest daughter has acm and

her youngest child [2 1/2 years] has acm. It sure runs in this family and

we are still being told by docs that it is not heriditery. regards

I have often wondered if Chiari could possibly be the result of a vaginal birth,

where the baby's head is squeezed too tightly. Since my daughter has been

complaining of head pain and her head feeling as if it were " too heavy for her

neck, " I have been thinking back to her birth.

She wasn't an extremely big baby, 8 lbs., 7 1/2 oz, 22 inches long, but after

she

was born she did have a really pointy head, I mean it was a conehead. Of course

it

rounded out after about a week, but it still makes me wonder. I have no idea if

I

was a difficult delivery or not, because in those days women were in a

" twilight "

sleep, as my mother called it. I've never seen my newborn picture, either.

Of course, if this theory were true then cesaerean (how do you spell that?)

babies

wouldn't have ACM caused by birth trauma.

Just a thought,

Sheila
